National Merit Finalist chances

So…i just looked over my National Merit Finalist application and I made two spelling errors…am I screwed?

no, you’re not screwed.

NMCorp isn’t looking for insignificant reasons to disqualify kids.

Phewww…so I got a 2100 on my SAT, I have a 4.2 GPA…and I turned in everything for the application process…should i be good?

Did you send your SAT score to NMCorp …code 0085?

If so, you’re good. If not, go do that.

Is the essay weighted a lot on the decision of the finalist? My S already submitted his part, I think the school hasn’t finished its part yet. I just re-read my S essay, now it seems that he had used some very strong phrases and words to describe an experience he had, and now it sounded like making the people involved in the event look like the bad guys. When I first read it, it seemed okay that he conveyed his leadership skills and characteristic of perseverance and not to give up things easily. Now, we felt we are screwed. Can he ask his school to let him change the essay? I know the possibility is zero, just wanted to see if anyone of you can give me some advice.

Thank you.

Go ahead and ask the school if he can change the essay. Or call NMCorp.

That said, I doubt the essay will affect your son’s chances.

I only know of one case where the essay hurt a student’s chances and that student wrote a rude essay about how stupid the PSAT NMSQT process is.

I just called the NMSC, they girl said no changes are allowed. too bad :frowning: . The school can see the essay but they can’t make any changes.
The people involved in the story were some of his teachers, it was like the teachers already gave up on the project, but the kids showed persistence and turned the project around be a successful one. I just hope that the readers won’t think my S is too arrogant since he is not.
Thanks for your response!

Don’t worry…it sounds like it’s fine. :)

It sounds like his school can see it and are they complaining?

No, no, there is no complaining from school. I was just concerned if my son’s essay will have a bad impact on his competition.

There isn’t much “competition” at this point. There are 16000 NMSF. 15000 will make NMF. The 1000 who don’t make it will likely have caused the problem themselves…bad grades, low SAT, didn’t do the paperwork, discipline problem at school, etc. Your son’s essay will very likely be fine.

If the essay wasn’t fine, you probably would have noticed that fact the first time you read it. As you said, he just mentioned that the students stuck with a project when the teachers had given up. No problem with that.
