National Merit Finalist. Finalist=Boost?

So here's a question regarding finalist status. I was privileged enough to become a National Merit Finalist. I will be sending an update soon containing this information, a quick letter of interest, and several other awards that I've received since applying. My question is how big of an impact does getting finalist status make in admissions?

Low to non-existent boost

That was my guess. Thank you

I would think a great percentage of the applicant pool are NMF or NMSF.

No boost; 90+% of NMSF advance to NMF. But if you’re sending in info about other awards, there’s no harm in mentioning it.

this .

Of course it matters!

Not just your advancement to NMF standing . . . but you were also smart enough to let them know.

An opportunity to “touch” the committee again should NEVER be wasted.

Better than nothing I guess lol

I believe 15,000 out of 16,000 semifinalists become finalists. If you’ve already listed semifinalist as one of the awards you’ve won, it’s really not worth sending them an additional update. Honors that would be worthy of an additional update include placing in the Intel Talent Search, olympiad qualifying, etc.

Any opportunity to have your file reviewed should be taken. This is a legit reason. Not much boost, however.
