YAY I’m a finalist! My safety school said they’d give me a full ride if I became a finalist…good news indeed.

Letter arrived friday in CA.

*Here’s a question-do schools order the list of NM Finalists the way they order SAT range scores? *

Are you asking if schools are getting lists of who was named NMF? It’s kind of too late for them to do anything with that list, isn’t it? For scholarship purposes, NMFs indicate their 1st choice.

No, I agree-I don’t think it would be applicable NM scholarship purposes. My question is really about non supporting schools which might be considering our students for parallel, non NM, scholarships. I wonder if they are able to order the list as a component in narrowing their decision?

Mary: Mom of Jared. Not my biz but since this is your first post I’d highly caution you not to use your names (unless they’re your fake “CC” names).

As for whether or not colleges order lists - No. I called NM to ask that the other day. I didn’t want to bother them with notifying of finalist status (my d), if they got lists anyway. But NM said they do NOT sell/send finalist lists. They only give lists of names to the schools that are on your first choice list. Nothing like the massive lists the must somehow be sent out earlier (based on all the mail we all get!).

The certificate arrived (bent in spite of the cardboard:rolleyes:) on Friday (we homeschool). No student letter yet, probably delayed by the weather.

Anyone knows the answer, thanks.

Here is this question: 15000 finalists were selected but only 8200 will receive Merit Scholarship awards.–Who decide and how which "finalists” will become part of the 8200?

This was answered on the previous page…

1) The ones that get the college scholarships, get them because they chose to go to those schools. So, a student can decide to get one simply by choosing a school that awards them to all NMFs. However, some colleges have competitive scholarships.

2) The ones who get the corporate ones, are usually the children of employees of those corporations.

3) The ones who get the NMCorp are then selected by NM people and consultants who review the students’ stats, etc. The scholarships are proportionately awarded by state.

That “only 8200” number is not set in stone. Since there are some schools that award to all that are NMFs, that number can change.

Does that explain it?

Has anyone heard of someone getting a corporate scholarship, who wasn’t the child of an employee?

R124687 That takes care of my question. Thanks so much. Same situation, didn’t want to notify if they will order the list anyway. Good luck to EVERYONE on the right school/scholarship quest and have some fun with the process!

My son has what is termed a ‘corporate award,’ and it didn’t come from either my employer or my husband’s. There are foundations out there that also sponsor corporate awards, and that is what my son received. His award was given out because we live in the area that is served by a particular foundation.

@mosineemom who determined that your son was eligible for corporate award. Did you have to call NMC and alert them? Thanks.

mosineemom…

What is the foundation? How much did your son receive? Was it a one-time award or was it for 4 years?

AllrounderDad: NMSC professional staff give the awards, if you meet the criteria. YOu would have to have specified that criteria when the application was submitted. If you feel you qualify for that award, you may want to call up NMSC and make sure that you are in the running:

example of such awards: If you child had mentioned geological related subjects

Chevron Corporation–10 awards—8 awards for Finalists who are children of employees of the corporation and its affiliated companies; 2 awards for other Finalists planning to major in geological and earth sciences/geosciences, geological/geophysical or petroleum
engineering

Omron Foundation, Inc.–5 awards for Finalists with preference (1st) for those who are children of employees of Omron; (2nd) for those from Illinois or Michigan intending to major in electrical engineering, science, or mathematics.

Mom2collegekids posted: That “only 8200” number is not set in stone. Since there are some schools that award to all that are NMFs, that number can change.

Thanks, make sense.

Hmm, I haven’t gotten any notification yet. I’m in CA (San Jose area) with a 218.
Am I in?

_wishonacupcake: are you a junior or senior? If you are a junior who took the PSAT this past October you won’t receive notification that you are in the running to be a semi-finalist until April. If this is the case and you do become a finalist your official notification won’t arrive until this time next year.

wishonacupcake…

If you’re a junior, you won’t know if you made NMSF until Sept (some schools will tell you in late August).

Calif’s cutoff score often ranges between 216-219, so it’s unknown whether you will make the cutoff until fall of your senior year. Then, if you become a NMSF, if you do the paperwork, get a good SAT, have a good GPA, and aren’t a discipline problem at school, you’ll likely make NMF.

Thanks for the date correction mom2collegekids. I don’t know what I was thinking.

This is soooo overdue, but I just remembered about National Merit (haha I know…ridiculous). I never got a rejection letter, but I also never got notified? I’m in NY with a 212. It’s probably not going to make finalist, but have commended scholars been notified yet?
Regardless, I don’t really care–my SATs were a lot better–but I’d like to know if I got anything!
