National Merit Finalist Scholarship?

I'm a NM Semi-finalist right now wondering about NMF scholarships at UR. When I did a search on this forum, I found a post in which the UR rep (dweinerman) said that the minimum award was 22k a year, but on UR's Financial Aid website it said 15k. Anyone know their policy? Thanks.

Knife_Play, I believe the 15k figure was from last year, not this year. I'll make sure to tell financial aid about it. $22,000 per year is not only the minimum you can receive for being a National Merit Finalist, but also the maximum. The only higher award is the full-tuition Renaissance scholarship, which isn't contingent upon NMF status.

Thanks, dweinerman.

can you get much need-based financial aid in addition to this?
I need at least $30K covered to consider Rochester :(

Yes you can... I receive both

thank you ^_^

Copy-pasted from the Rochester finaid website

Q. What if I have a National Merit, National Hispanic or National Achievement Scholarship? How does this affect my financial aid award?
A. First-year students who have chosen the University of Rochester as their first choice school will receive a university sponsored renewal scholarship of at least $15,000. The Financial Aid Office will be notified during the summer months of all recipients. If the award is not part of the financial aid package, the FAO will make the appropriate adjustments when notified of these awards.

According to UR, the page was "Last updated on Thursday, February 19, 2009".

So... either the amount actually changed to reflect the general destruction of college endowments or the financial aid office hasn't bothered to update.

Can someone please clarify this???

Thanks in advance!

Tetraoxygen, the financial aid website will be updated shortly. The correct amount is $22,000 per year. I apologize for the confusion.

Thank you dweinerman!

So if I put UR as my first choice (I'm a finalist), I will automatically win this scholarship or must I compete with the other finalists for it?

^ i'm wondering the same thing b/c i got finalist too

I don't believe it's guaranteed. My D is a NMF and has high hopes of attending UofR (she has not heard yet). I've been studying the NM wordage and I don't see definitive statements that as a NMF you will recieve that amount. From the forums I was thinking it was guaranteed but I am no longer so sure. NM site states they expect UofR to offer 20 scholarships, what if more than 20 list UofR as first choice? The UofR website states:

In the answer it uses the words "will receive", sounds great. But the question is if they have a National Merit Scholarship, not if they are a NM Finalist. So to get the 22K you need to be chosen for a NM Scholarship, not all finalists get scholarships. My take is that UofR can choose not to offer scholarships to all NMF who have selected UofR as 1st choice. I hope I'm wrong, right now D has UofR as 1st choice and really wants to go there. I hope she hears soon, this having to choose one school to list really does complicate the process. List a school with guaranteed money or really list your 1st choice and hope you're one of the lucky 20. Rolling the dice with these kinds of dollars involved is not my cup of tea.

I don't know, dweinerman's earlier post in this very thread says, "$22,000 per year is not only the minimum you can receive for being a National Merit Finalist, but also the maximum."

Sounds guaranteed to me... shrugs

Mike1123 is correct. If you are admitted and designate UR as your top choice by May 1 you will receive $22K per year.

Thanks dweinerman, that's the best news I've had in a while. All we have to do is hope we get a favorable reply soon. By the way, the information session, tour, and overall niceness of the admissions staff really swayed my daughters opinion of UofR. Of all the schools we visited, UofR presented itself the best.

jhraymond, thanks for the kind words! Your daughter should hear from us shortly. If you have any other questions or if you'd like to call the office, my number is 585-275-8612.

I must say I agree. UR really went the extra step to accommodate. The little things like free, chilled water (during a snowstorm no less) really left an impression on me. Everyone was very friendly, and the tunnels were just awesome.

dweinerman - What is the scholarship amount for NMF this year (fall 2010)? Thanks.

It’s still $22000.

My son is a NMSF now. He applied to UR. Does he need to schedule an interview for the scholarship for NMF? Thanks.
