Has anyone received any scholarships recently from schools in response to your status as a National Merit Finalist? I got a letter from UT at Dallas, which gave full tuition, 5000$ cash prize, ~100,000 in total aid, according to the letter. Also, since I am seriously considering this, should I wait for and expect better and more offers? Thanks everyone

UTD is one of the more comprehensive offers, but you might be hearing from U. of Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas A & M, Univ. of Tulsa and others. I see no reason to jump on this offer and accept it at this point unless you have visited and are sure it is the place you most want to be.

If I am not mistaken, UTD does not have dorms, so you need to live in apartments. I am not sure how much of that is covered by the scholarship offer.

This maybe the only want that you can still apply. I think D also received UO but UTD is the last one. She received lots of email and deleted them all(so I'm not aware of these schools). Maybe U of Cincinati(sp?)

I'm a finalist and have been getting mail from Dallas too, although I haven't received such a generous scholarship offer (yet). If I were in your shoes, I would figure out when the deadline is to respond to UT-Dallas and wait until that date to decide. I got a letter from Vanderbilt promising scholarship money (so you never know, a better school might make you an offer in the near future).

During the first week of February, my son received a letter from Arizona State which says "we want to hear from you at any time" with "at any time" underlined. It does say he would need to be admitted and designate ASU as his first choice by the National Merit Corporation's deadline in order to receive ASU's scholarship. So, they are still actively recruiting, and I'm sure others will be too. If others find out about such offers still available, it would be nice to post them.

It was for a $23,500 OOS state scholarship. It also says to compare it to scholarships offered by other schools, pointing out it is renewable for four years and that scholarships offered by other schools may not be the same amount after the first year. Sounds like it is important to look at the fine print for all four years when deciding on these. I'd also be sure to check out what exactly it takes to renew scholarships at various schools.

If you're interested in one of the schools with these big NMF packages and the application date is past, it sure sounds worth a phone call to see if they will still accept yours. But time may be running out as I think some want you to make them your first choice by March 1.

Yes, as a finalist, I have received the full scholarship awards from UTD, Arizona State, and UO (UTD's is the best, in my opinion). The only problem is that I already selected the University of Chicago as my top choice (and got in); I wouldn't turn down UC for UTD, AS, or UO anyway.

Also, do the colleges to which I've applied for regular decision know that I'm a finalist? If not, would it do any good to tell them?

^^^I don't believe they are notified of your finalist status unless you notify them. I believe my son faxed his colleges a copy of the finalist notification.

^is there a problem with having other college in there as your top choice? Should D blank that out?

^^^I wouldn't send something that listed a different college as first choice. I think son didn't have a "first choice" early on. Then, he listed a school he changed his mind about, and had to file a new "first choice" before the deadline.

Just send an e-mail, I guess, updating the awards information.

Does University of Arizona have a late application deadline? They also offer a free ride to finalists.
