My son got the eagerly anticipated news last week that he made National Merit Finalist! This bumps him up from the Spirit of Auburn Presidential Scholarship to National Scholars Presidential Scholarship. Needless to say mom and dad are very proud. :)

I’m curious to hear from any previous National Scholars recipients how the “University stipend for four years at $4,000 to $8,000 ($1,000 to $2,000 per year), depending on eligibility…” aspect of the scholarship turned out for them. What is the criteria for the amount awarded?

When we toured Auburn last spring, I asked an admissions counselor how it was determined. She stated if you could show $1 of need( I assume through FASFA) then you got the $2000 stipend per year, otherwise the $1000 per year stipend.

We were also told that the $1500 laptop money can be used for something else if the child already has a laptop. Those funds will be deposited into the student’s account.

This is true – you don’t necessarily have to use the technology stipend for a laptop – you can use it to pay for other university expenses. Since it’s deposited into the student account, and no matter how the student decides to spend it, Auburn will see at least some of this money come right back to the university.

If Auburn was your 1st choice college before March 1 they should have your scholarship status updated in the computer systems. (They updated for my D) on the 9th. The new “National Scholars Presidential Scholarship” certificate and letter showed up in Saturday’s mail.

Boatfoot,
Please don’t mind if I ask, but are you in-state or OOS? We’re OOS and have not yet received the upgrade notification yet. MM has D’s choice.
