National Merit Finalist

Has anyone gotten a letter awarding the $2500 one time award? Can it be used at any college-including those not on the NM list? Has any one gotten a first choice school match letter? or is that just awarded by the college when you get financial aid letter?

^ Yes, I'm pretty sure you can use the $2.5k at any accredited college.

I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet about the formal NM scholarship...has anyone in the Northeast?

According to the NMSC site, those letters go out on March 25th. To see the calendar, scroll down to the last page of this document.

D got her letter from NMSC today. She is awarded a corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship, $2000/yr renewable to 4 yrs.

Thanks Quill Pen, that's what I wanted to know :)
crossing my fingers!

jack1232 - was it from your/husband's employer? still say that this process is confusing -
daughter contacted by nm directly that they were looking at her for the $2500 national award - if it is so prestigious, how come it is for less money? I know that one school i contacted said that they would renew the $2500 subsequent years, even though NM doesn't.

yes, from our employer. our company is a sponsor of NMS. Corporate-sponsored usually with more money.

jack1232, do you mind sharing which company?

as long as you qualify for corporate-sponsored award (i.e., one of parents' employer is a sponsor of NMSC), you usually get $2000/yr for 4 yrs, regardless which company is the sponsor.

Too bad no one I know works at a qualifying corporate sponsor...will be waiting for the week of the 25th...

Do the college sponsored letters go out 3/25 as well? The college ones in general seem to be worth about $1000 renewable for 4 years-at lease at the school S has applied to. It is better than the one time $2500...what college is renewing that?

I just checked the link on NM dates- thanks. Do you all see it as saying that if a college is chosen (because we got the letter saying to immediately choose one), to change the college they must 1) become "undecided" & notify NM of this & 2) pick another college before letters are mailed on 4/29?

has anybody gotten anything from a college/NM?

if someone had received anything from national merit, they would only be permitted to notify their immediate family of this until may 6th.

Yes. I imagine that the notification letter will say that “only your immediate family should be told of your selection until Wednesday, May 6.”

Not that we would have any insight into this whatsoever. cough
