National Merit Finalists: What made you choose UCF over schools like UF?

For those of you who were accepted to both UF and UCF, what made you choose UCF when the costs of attendance for both universities were about equal due to the Florida Incentive Scholarship? I visited and UCF recently and loved everything about it, while last time I visited UF I was very underwhelmed (during their open house). I will be visiting UF again soon for their Gator Engineering Experience Day, but as of right now I am leaning towards UCF. My only problem is that I am having trouble justifying turning down UF to go to UCF when the costs are equal, as UF is usually considered a much better school. My intended area of study is Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, so any answers specific to the engineering programs at both schools would be helpful.

I believe that the engineering program at the University of Florida is a better program in general, but it is very important that you love the college that you attend. You’re going to be there for four years, so don’t go to the one that has the best program if you don’t love the school. They’re both just state schools, so neither name is going to carry a huge amount of prestige with employers. Additionally, UCF is in Orlando and has a ton of great engineering internship opportunities just down the road, whereas Gainesville doesn’t have as many. In the end, just go with whatever school you enjoy most, not the one that you believe has the best program.

Thanks for the reply! I definitely agree, I visited UF today and had a much better experience than I did last time. I think I will be going to UF after all but it’s nothing against UCF, UCF is still an awesome school
