National Merit, Honors at UK?

Has anyone applied to UK as a NMSF? How about the Honors Program - any thoughts on the application, scholarship, etc. process?

We are curious as well…any information would be helpful.

My S applied as a NMSF. We visited UK in Nov and had a great experience. His counselor gave us a tour of the campus and set up a meeting with the director of the Honors Program. He has had a skype interview for the Singletary scholarship also. All in all UK has been very friendly and helpful. Now we just wait to see if he gets accepted to Honors program and ends up getting either the Singletary or Patterson scholarships.

Thanks mommaof5. We have a visit scheduled next month. I have concerns about the lack of housing that is discussed on a lot of their blogs…hopefully we will get some reassurances when we visit…good luck to your son!

3Triplet - they are in the middle of building a beautiful new Honors dorm. It will be opening fall 2013. It does cost more than the amount allotted by the NMSF scholarship, also the scholarship only includes the basic meal plan - 5 meals a week. My S looked at me and said ok that’ll take care of Monday. LOL I think we figured to “up” both of those was going to cost around $4,500 (something like that). They also are planning on tearing down much of the dated housing and replacing it with new housing over the next few years. At least, that’s what the ad. rep said. Good luck with your visit!!!

mommaof5- I go to UK currently (am a sophmore) and 5 meals a week seems like a little, but keep in mind that those are just “meal swipes,” which get you admission to all you can eat buffets or the cafe in the library. The minimum meal plan also gives you “flex dollars” which you can use at tons of places on campus; Starbucks, Subway, AND wherever meal swipes are excepted. Out of all the people I have met on campus, not a single one has kept the upgraded meal plan for more than a single semester. The people who even had it for the fall ended up GIVING AWAY meal swipes so that they wouldn’t expire before the spring semester. I would not recommend upgrading the meal plan without trying the minimum for a few weeks.

Also, I’m a Singletary Scholar and an Honors Program Student, so feel free to ask me anything. :)

Collegegirl1893: we have an upcoming visit and will be arriving on Sunday for our Monday scheduled tour/appointments. Our plan is to spend some time on campus Sunday as well. Where would you recommend we eat on campus…we are really booked Monday and won’t have time to eat at a campus location…thanks in advance for suggestions.

3Triplet- If you want to eat ON campus then the best place would probably be the cafe in the library called Ovid’s. It offers salads, paninis, and wraps. It’s also usually not a busy as the buffets during the day. I definitely recommend the chipotle chicken wrap. It’s delicious…but not the most healthy thing lol.

Thanks so much…that works as dau wants to spend some time checking out the library…we have a jam packed schedule so some place that may be possibly less busy is appreciated as well…dau just got UK M&Ms today…go blue! :)

My S got his Patterson Scholarship letter on Saturday!

collegegirl1893 - thanks for the info on the meal plans!

Wow… Mommaof5 congratulations to you and your son… How many of friends here on CC have received interview call from UKY about ‘singletary scholars’?

My sister heard on Thursday that she got a Singletary Scholarship.

Interviews for the Singletary Scholarship started in November and end in early March I believe.

Any decisions yet?

Yes. My sister and three other people from my high school were offered the Singletary.

Has anyone heard about Honors Program acceptances? (not scholarships). Thanks!

2013abc - so far nothing here. Good luck!

We were there for a visit last weekend. The Honors rep said tere were 1800 applications this year (I think she said for 400 spots) and that decisions would be made on the next two weeks or so.

Thanks, mommaof5 and 3Triplet. Anyone else going to a UK Merit Weekend in March – or has been to one in recent years?

My daughter and I will be attending Merit Weekend on Mar 15-16. Does anyone know how many Singletary Scholarships were awarded this year?
