I would love some insight on a letter my son received from Kenyon College today. It is from the Dean of Admissions asking for an update on his National Merit status and talking about why National Merit Finalists like Kenyon. It also said he should inform the NMS Corp WHEN Kenyon becomes his first choice.

Does this mean they are admitting him? He has not gotten a letter of admission yet and it would be nice to hear some good news!!

Did he apply? If so, then I’d say there’s a strong chance he will be admitted. They also would like a heads up as to how much money they will be giving him should he name Kenyon as first choice to NMC. Perhaps to factor that in to a financial aid package.

Schools are not notified of NM status; it is up to the applicant to do so. D was specifically asked to notify in order for merit aid to be adjusted to the new status.

D notified eight colleges that NMSF status changed to NMS. The majority of schools sent back an email of some sort - ranging from “thanks for the info” to a congrats, etc. My personal favorite was Rice University which responded with an email saying that supplemental updates are no longer being accepted as applications are currently under review. Hmm … couldn’t notify colleges any earlier as the NMC doesn’t notify the student until mid-Feb. Two of the schools - no response whatsoever. (Actually had a bet that those two particular schools wouldn’t respond. Both top LACs: d is in one (EA) and the other doesn’t notify until April 1.) To say that different schools deal with applicants differently is an understatement.

ignatius – same experience here; notification of status update ranged from “Glad to see you are still interested in our school” to … not a thing. We don’t even know if they got the notification. And, of course, the two schools that did not respond were the two in which she is most interested. Not very helpful.
