Commended and Semi-Finalist letters have been mailed. If you have received a letter asking for your top two school choices, please post your score and state. That way, we can estimate the cut-off. Thanks!

I think there is usually a 1-2 point disparity at most between the semi-finalist cut offs from the previous year to the current one in any given state. Just looking at last years cut-offs should give you a pretty good idea, unless you are within 1 point or exactly on last years cut-off for your state.

Yeah, I’m EXACTLY on last year’s cut-off. Kind of nervous…

That’s probably a bit nerve-wracking lol. Good luck and hope you qualify.

Even though NJ was tied for the highest cut-off last year, my score should be well above whatever cut-off occurs this year.

Hm. I have a problem, I scored within range for National Merit SF (219 in Virginia) but I accidentally put the wrong address on my PSAT form. Will they send the letter to that incorrect address?

If you just make the cutoff for commended, do you still get the letter? (aka I just made 201)
And when would the letters be mailed by?

how do u know the letters have been mailed out already?

I thought we were notified in September.

“In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists.”

http://www.nationalmerit.org/nmsp.php

^ This early notification doesn’t indicate whether the student is a Semifinalist or just Commended.

Oh thanks for clarifying silverturtle

I just called them about changing my address, and they said to just mail them and it should be fine.

I also learned some other interesting stuff: the letters have already been mailed to the schools, and she also told me that I am on the list (wasn’t a big surprise, but it was nice to have it confirmed).

any chance of NY going down so a 216 can make it???

plzzzzzz

In case anyone on this thread is wondering, a poster on another thread said he/she called and was told that the getting an April letter cutoff (and thus Commended cutoff) is 201, same as last year.

It’s possible but highly unlikely. Year to year fluctuations are usually limited to a one point increase or decrease.

Since the commended cutoff didn’t change, would it make sense that most of the semi-finalist cutoffs wouldn’t change? Or is that just wishful thinking

Is there any confirmation from anybody else that the cut-off score for commended (and letters) is 201?

Yes, confirmed with my principal today. Fifty-two kids got Commended at my extremely competitive public CA high school, haha. I got the letter also.

elsa4maria is that original post that had the cutoff number

If you just make the cutoff for commended, do you still get the letter? (aka I just made 201)

If you scored a 201, then you should get the April letter
