I'm a National Merit Finalist, but I haven't received any awards yet or sent in my 1st choice card. Does anyone have any experience with this at NU? I know NU gives 2k/yr renewable, but was there a deadline to designate NU as your first choice? If I don't get any corporate or National Merit money, is the NU scholarship guaranteed? Thanks!

Contact NU’s financial aid office! I believe the deadline is May 1 but don’t take my word for it!

Yes, Northwestern will give you the 2k (renewable every year) and honestly, I think thats better than any corporate scholarship out there. You do have to designate Northwestern as your first choice though, but I can’t be sure of the deadline. I’d do it asap.

I am fortunately a happy NU EDer. I am also “fortunately” a winner of a National Merit $2500 Scholarship (received the letter two days ago).

I was hoping to receive NU’s $2000/yr (renewable for 4 yrs) for National Merit Finalist. However, I just called NU and was told that I can’t receive NU’s NMF scholarship even if I would decline NMSC offer.

This NU policy is unfair to those who had been “fortunately/unfortunately” selected by NMSC to win that $2500 scholarship. NU office acknowledged that they faced the same question every year, but “policy is policy”.

I am still a happy NU 2014er!

There was a very long and angry thread about that from a parent. It does seem somewhat silly, but ultimately it’s just a flipping of fortune- if you were going to many other similar schools, you’d be happy to be getting the $2500!

No idea on the deadline, but I would just do it soon. I believe it is after your deposit deadline.

kyw123: The financial aid office confirmed that to me too (about my daughter’s $2500 award).

I think some corporate scholarships are much better than 2K per year. The company I work for awards 3K-8K per year for 4 years. In most cases, if you’re going to NU, you’d get the 8K.
