Well on the website it says that all the $2500 ones get sent out march 20th, so I think the letter meant that the press release itself would be the second of four for 2008, the other ones being corporate, college, and more college scholarship recipients.
I only wish there were more waves of letters being sent out, lol... Would make me feel a LOT less uneasy!

^^ thats sad that i didnt get 1 of those $2500 ones. they would've been the only ones i qualify for, since my parents don't work for any scholarship-giving companies & i'm not applying to any colleges that give scholarships for nat'l merit

hmm where does it say that all of the $2500 ones get sent out in March? also has anyone from MA gotten one?

On page 4 it shows a timeline saying that they send out the $2500 on March 20th.

For what it's worth....

My D received a letter informing her that she was selected for the $2,500 National Merit Scholarship on Wednesday, March 26. The letter was dated and postmarked March 24.

We got the letter on March 25th

could someone refer us to this year's state cutoffs for National Merit and Commended? sorry if this is already posted and I was too lazy to find it..

To those of you who are still waiting, my daughter's NMSC scholarship award letter only arrived this afternoon and was postmarked on the 25th, so they are still coming in!

Proudmom,

May I ask where you are? Just curious about mail reaching various areas in the midwest, ast, west, north or south. Still hoping for my daughter...

Got one as well, yesterday (in NY)
Unfortunately, I won't get to use the scholarship; I'm going to Oxford, which isn't on their list of approved schools! (And considering Oxford does not give international FA, it would have been very much appreciated, too.)

Hi, I was recently offered the standard $2500 National Merit Scholarship. The letter says that the scholarship is offered for my use at "College X." Does this mean that I have been accepted to "College X" and that the scholarship has been approved by them?

I'd presume that this is not the case, but I'd like to be 100% sure. Thanks!

To quote NMSC:

"College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
Officials of each sponsor college select winners of their awards from Finalists who have been accepted for admission and have informed NMSC by the published deadlines that the sponsor college or university is their first choice. These awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study. "

These are the ones that are being awarded now. It says they are renewable, but that may be up to the individual college. The $2500 one that you can use anywhere you go (National Merit Scholars) and that seem to be a one time award, have not been given out yet.

Individual colleges give out different amounts (two colleges have offered S $1000 NMF merit awards).

Thank you for the reply, J'adoube. However, it has been my understanding that college-sponsored Merit Scholarship will not be offered until approx. April 30th. Furthermore, while the letter I received specifically names the college, it says that I can change the school to which the scholarship is made out.

I wonder, is anybody else actually losing money by receiving a 2500? (i.e. going to a school that gives more than 2500 for NMFs, but won't make up the difference?)

I got the NMF Scholarship at USC (half-tuition scholarship valued at ~$17000). When I received my updated financial award letter, the University grant they had originally given me was reduced by the exact amount of the scholarship I had received >.<

My D did not get a letter, I assume she will not at this point.

electriccool, your $2500 scholarship can be used at any college. However, you need to tell NM what that college is as soon as you have decided where to go. I believe the dead line to inform Nation Merit might be the end of April, but please check with Nation Merit to make sure.

thanks for the clarification, christian2. but just to be sure:

even though the letter, in big bold letters, names "COLLEGE X" (my first choice school) in particular, this in no way insinuates that i have been excepted there, right?

We received the notification of the National Merit $2500 Scholarship on March 27. The letter was postmarked March 24, and that was the "Offer Date" on the letter as well. We live in PA. The reply date is April 4.

I don't believe that the offer means an acceptance at that college; just that you identified that school as your first choice to attend if accepted. You can change the name of the school you plan to attend; there is a form to submit, and the NMSC approves the change.

I would think wherever you plan to attend would be fine -- it just needs to be a baccalaureate degree, no service academy, and meet the other stipulations of the terms.

Here is the link for the "college choice card" :
