National Merit? Notifications??

Update--I finally convinced the school today of the possibility that they should have received a letter from National Merit. They took my suggestion of calling National Merit and learned that the school's zipcode was wrong in the system. The school was only getting about a half of the mail that it was supposed to. It is a new school only in its 3rd year. Now my son and the other students will get the letter and the instructions for registering. I just would think that someone in this very large school would be tasked with knowing everything about National Merit, but alas, I was mistaken.

Va_catlover, I've been following your postings with interest. We, too, live in VA. Our school has been around 50 years, and we've never had a NM winner.

Guess the kids do not think it's that big of a deal. Or they did not care to listen to teachers and guidance people who encouraged taking it as juniors.

Maybe it's because they think they take too many tests, as is.

BTW, my son has not heard a thing. He had a 224.

We're in NOVA/Fairfax County. Most of the NM finalists are at the local magnet school for Science & Technology, but there usually are some semi's and finalists at most of the other high schools, but not all. The kids must take the test as juniors here--I've never heard of anyone having a choice in it. They also take it as freshmen and sophomores.

I hope your son hears something soon.

My daughter got 229 in CA, but no letter. Should I be calling someone? Collegeboard or Principal? I guess I can't do anything until Monday, since it's 6pm on Firday. Oh well- just one of many opportunities to practice patience.

Never mind - turns out d got a summons to the principal's office and got her letter. She just didn't feel it worth mentioning, LOL. When I said something about a deadline she saie "Oh it's not till May 28th."

Glad she's on top of it...

which schools should i send it to, to get some $:
umich
uchicago?
wisconsin
rutgers
Northwestern?
nyu

I'm really surprised I got a letter since I only got 202...

Haha modulation I only got a 202 as well, but I was even more surprised by the kids who didn't receive a letter...especially the ones who claimed to have done amazing on their PSATs. Ha. Oh well.

So apparently my name was on the list sent to the school but my letter got lost in the mail... they're sending another. I suggest everyone call if they haven't gotten a letter yet.

bingle - same here. I was watching the mailbox daily and checking this thread regularly, when my DD finally said "oh yeah, my GC gave me the letter last week. it's somewhere in my backpack." really, i'm trying to let this be HER process, not mine, but sometimes it is soooooo hard!

^haha my parents dont care at all. mabe its cuz they're not on CC :p

whats the deadline again??

28th? lol...?rite

no idea..

i havent seen the paper since i threw it in my backpack.

I haven't gotten anything... does anyone know the cutoff for NJ?

there is no cutoff for NJ. the cutoff for the country is 202.

^^^^
actually 200

It is 200 - after a couple of weeks of nail-biting and thinking the letter got lost in the mail, our school announced the junior commended students (those who got 200 or over) at our academic awards last night. Looks like they had the letters for a while and kept it mum, which only gives D a short time to make up her mind as to where the second letter is going (pretty set on the first)...UGH, now it is a scramble to try and get an extra visit or two in....

The lowest above 200 score at my school (WA) is 201, and he got a letter.

S finally received his letter from the counselor -- glad there was no other problem. Appears that there is great variation in the lag between the school receiving them and the kids receiving them.
