USC has a special orientation, seminars and a Residential College for the Trustee and Presidential Scholars. Do these programs also to apply to those not invited to the interview, but receiving a Scholarship by being an NMF?

On a side note, were any NMSF offered Dean's Scholarships?

A NMScholar will receive the National Merit Scholarship along with the $1,000 per year NMFoundation Scholarship, if admitted. If a NMScholar was invited to interview for the Presidential Scholarship…and bumped up to Trustee the student would receive the higher scholarship.

I have never heard of a NMScholar being offered a Dean’s Scholarship. SOME fortunate NMScholars do receive smaller grants/scholarships from the schools they will be attending at SC such as Viterbi, Marshall or Dornsife in addition to the NMScholarship.

My S interviewed for the Presidential scholarship. Yesterday, he received a letter from National Merit that he has been selected as the winner of a National Merit $2500 Scholarship. The letter says that “the Schlarship is offered for your use at University of Southern California…” then says that he can change it to a different college prior to May. He has to send his acceptance to National Merit by April 4th. If he accepts the $2500 from National Merit Scholarship Corporation is he giving up his (at least) 1/2 tuition scholarship from USC?

^^ No. The NMF Presidential is a USC scholarship, not a NM scholarship. The $1000 per year NMFoundation scholarship (as Georgia girl stated above) is the “official” NMF part. This is the part you’d have to give up if you choose the $2500 one time amount. You choose the $1000 for up to 4 years or the one-time $2500 amount. At least this is what was explained to us last year

And yes, the NMF Presidential students have the same benefits as the regular Presidential scholarship students.

Didn’t have any special orientation though. Went with everyone else. Birnkrant students did get to move in 2 days earlier than everyone else for special activities. This made move-in easy.

Thanks for the assurances, but I’ll be a bundle of nerves until I get the word. His is first in his class, but it is a small class…only 120 kids and the school only recently started offering a few AP classes. I’ve seen NMF valedictorians get rejected from other schools on par with USC, so I’m not taking anything for granted. I fear that there are higher standards for kids majoring in the sciences…

Anyway, thanks for the assurances. This week is gonna be a rough one! :-)

LegacyMom, I feel for you! Remember to keep checking his USConnect page. Look for those new tabs for Enrollment Deposit and the Event Tab to say Explore USC! We are far from CA, in a rural part of the state, and it took about a week for my DS to get his packet, but we had confirmation from the USConnect page. Crossing my fingers that the tabs go up tomorrow or Wednesday! Hang in there!

Thanks, NC! Honestly, I haven’t checked USC Connect once. I am waiting for other reports and then I’ll probably give it a day after that. I’m afraid I’ll drive myself nuts if I check too soon. :-)

camomof3: I called National Merit Corp and they told me that if S turns down the $2500 he’ll be considered a “finalist” but not a “national merit scholar”.
I also called USC and they told me that he could accept the $2500 from National Merit and it would have no effect on any scholarship $ that USC might provide. I asked about the $1,000/yr and she wouldn’t comment specifically about $1000/yr to each NMF in addition to the Presidential Scholarship. “Free money is free money”, is what USC just told me.
Maybe they no longer give the $1000/yr to the NMF?
Oh, I just read Georgiagirl’s post. Maybe he will get both???

a NMF can receive only ONE official NM scholarship which are those scholarships that are administered through and distributed by NMSF. [ the 1/2 tuition USC scholarship is administered by USC.] So your son will have to decide if he wants the one time $2500 or $4000 over 4 years.

Pebbles: Your S will be a NM scholar if he accepts the $1000 per year, 4 year NMF scholarship at USC---- even if he turns down the $2500 one time amount. Not sure why that particular term matters so much to people, but your S will be a “Scholar” regardless. Went through this with D last year and the $1000 per year for 4 years was better for us ($4000 vs. $2500). And no— you cannot get both this and the $2500 as stated above.

This will be made more clear after admittance when the scholarship information is sent to you and the paperwork is filled out.

The paperwork came after the scholarship notifications and March admits, but don’t remember exactly when (early April sometime).

A National Merit Scholar who goes to USC (as I am) gets the half tuition Presidential scholarship from USC as well as $1000 per year for being a National Merit Scholarship finalist.

The NMF Presidential Scholarship is nice, but seriously, I will feel like we hit the jackpot if my son just gets accepted. (NMF is just a nice bonus.) Fight on!

I am a NMF (haven’t designated 1st choice school yet) and just discovered from the USConnect Financial Aid page that I received the USC Presidential Scholarship (what I was nominated for) and $1000/semester University Scholarship from USC. I haven’t received a letter snail mail yet. Will I receive an additional $1000/year NM scholarship from NMSF once I designate USC as my 1st choice school?
