I'm OOS and am interested in Texas A&M. Here it says that OOS could be in excess of 55k.
National Merit | Honors Programs | Texas A&M University
I see the 38,600 and 12,000, but where does the extra 4.4k come from? NMF don't get OOS tuition waived do they? It says that the freshman scholarship deadline was Dec 1. Did I miss the scholarship deadline for national merit? It's under a different section so I'm not sure.

jrt: If you receive at least 1k in scholarship money from the Honors Program, you are then granted in-state tuition status. As a National Merit Finalist, you would of course be getting the 1K. My son is NM and has been accepted to A&M. Yes, the scholarship deadline has passed. However, I am unsure about NM students. I suggest you email nationalmerit@tamu.edu to get in touch with the person at A&M who handles NM recruitment.

Out of stater NMF get in state tuition plus 55k over 4 years, so they only end up paying about 30k over 4 years? If so, that sounds like a great deal.

If the deadline has passed, then the Honors College might not give me any. Or is the NMF money part of the Honors College scholarships?

I am looking at the information sent to my son, and it does say Dec. 1 deadline; however, I would still call or send an email to ask the question. If you are out-of-state and get at least 1k from the Honors Program, you are treated as a TX resident. According to the information I have from A&M …2009-2010 cost of attendance (tuition @ 15hrs a semester, residence hall, and meals) comes to a little over 16K a year. My paperwork states that the typical NM Finalist package is 48,600 over 4 years (12150 a year) plus an additional 2k for the freshman year only; so, that means 14150 for freshman year. Thus, you would be about 2k short of a full-ride for freshman year, and about 4k short the other 3 years…total for all four years=14K. In addition there is a 1K study abroad stipend and 1K transition award for the last semester of your senior year. In addition, you may still get other $ from your department or from the university. Hopes this helps. Please post and let us know what you discover when you contact A&M.

I emailed someone at nationalmerit@tamu.edu. They said that I can still apply. TAMU might be #1 on my list now. I’ll be visiting in January.

That’s great! I hope you have a great visit!
