<p>How helpful is it to your application to be a national merit scholar? Supposing you're a semi finalist, is that significantly helpful in admission or is it more about the scholarship?</p>
<p>It gives you a little boost above other applicants, but not much. It’s simply another test score, and colleges consider all aspects of an applicant (i.e. essay, grades, recommendations, etc) when considering them for admission.</p>

<p>One thing that is rarely discussed is that a strong PSAT and SAT shows year over year testing consistency. A low PSAT and high SAT could be perceived as more studying effort than ability. Bottom line a high PSAT & SAT should trump a high SAT.</p>
