National Merit Scholar

Does anyone know exctly what PSAT score you need to become a National Merit Scholar?

It depends how the majority of people do in your state - so it changes by year.

I remember reading a chart of average cutoffs in each state - let me see if I can find it for you.

EDIT: Copied this from another thread from 2005 (credit to northforker for posting it). I'm sure the numbers have changed since, but it gives you an idea.

Following are the qualifying indices for 2005 National Merit Program (Juniors who took PSAT in 2003). The cutoff index for commended students was 200. About 1.33 million students took the test in 2005 and 2004.

woah, surprisingly GA is up there on the cutoff number! :] I always thought we were the dumbest state...

i <3 how CA has the highest # semifinalist. yay CA! :p

They have 12% of America's people and 12% of the semifinalists. It makes sense, actually.

ha look at how dum alaska is they have like none

Hey.... don't be hatin on us Alaskans. There aren't many of us here and believe it or not, most of us like it that way. 2006 estimated population, 670,000. Less than 1% of the American population. What overpopulated, water rationed state are you from?

Haha, Northeast Florida isn't water rationed!

Sucks for all of you Georgians.

Good job WV results. You just reenforce the stereotype.

Whyyy does VA have to be so high?!

Oh and do you think you would know what It'd be for the national achievement schoalrship?

does anyone have a guess as to the texas cutoff this year?

it's 215!!!
