I'm working on filling out my application for National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. Part of it asks for an essay, and I'm just wondering: Do they want an essay similar to a normal college admission essay (like on the Common App) or something different?

The prompt is this:
"To help the reviewers get to know you, describe an experience you have had, a person who has influenced you, or an obstacle you have overcome. Explain why this is meaningful to you. Use your own words and limit your response to the space provided."

Any tips would be appreciated. :]

Also this is my first post here so, hello, all! :D

I wrote mine like a normal college admission essay, and my counselor accepted it. The prompt was so broad I think they pretty much expect you to use one of your college admission essays. Just my impression, though.

(The deadline’s nearly here, so I expect you’ve figured this out by now, but in case someone hasn’t…)

I wrote my essay as if it were a typical common app essay since the prompts were so similar. But I did not use the same one just in case they checked it or something.

Also, I was wondering if you guys had a title. And I’m not sure if how they want the spacing to be. I know they’re picky questions but any advice would be appreciated!
