National Merit Scholarship

Hi, I was wondering how many people who become National Merit Finalists and listed NEU as their number one choice get the full scholarship; is it a competitive thing or basically something you get automatically if you do it?

Thanks

From what I have heard, if you are admitted, and put them down as first choice, you are in (no further requirement). Although you need to meet whatever their deadlines are for naming them.

It is full tuition - you still need to pay room and board and fees. Also, there is a community service requirement for these students.

My D was a NMF and got full tuition even though she did not list NE as her first choice.

NE was very generous to offer her all 6 years for PharmD.

She ended up going somewhere else. We still don’t know if it was the right/best decision.

When did your D hear about the scholarship offer? And did she end up going to another PharmD and if so, where? I’m applied to this program, so I’m very curious.

Thanks in advance!

I think the scholarship offer came with the acceptance. But it has been a 3 years and my memory has gotten worse : (

Anyway, she went to UCLA neuroscience.

Good luck to you!!

The dean’s scholarship offer comes with the acceptance as did the honors program.

So doing the national merit first choice for NEU and getting accepted guarantee you get a full scholarship? Very good to know, thanks.

My S did choose Neu 6-year Pharmacy with National Merit Scholarship over UCSD biology major two years ago. He is now very happy at Neu. This is the best decision we ever made. He now understands how tough it would be to try to get into a Pharmacy school after BSc degree. He will be debt free. Neu covers full 6-year tuition fees.

D is Natl Merit Semifinalist and received no merit aid with her acceptance to NEU engineering and honors college. Is this typical?

Does applying EA give you a higher chance at a scholarship? I am applying regular and I’m worried they will “run out” of scholarships.

Not necessarily. Your D should be eligible for Dean’s scholarship unless her GPA is on the low side compared to her SAT (which I’m assuming is 2000+ b/c she’s semifinalist). Double check with NEU.

im pretty sure we get the scholarship after we become finalists
