I'm a national merit finalist, however, the university that I want to attend had a deadline of designating them as my first choice school for a scholarship, which I missed. (February 1st) This was due to the poor advice of my high school guidance counselor, who said that I should wait until I'm a finalist and I'll have plenty of time to choose between schools. So basically I'm out $8,000. Anyway, I get a call from the university I want to attend asking me to designate them as my first choice school. They're not giving me the scholarship.

I'm still very annoyed with them so would there be any benefit to this?

You did get bad advice, since you can change your first choice up until the NMSC deadline.

Why does that school want you to designate them as their first choice if they won't give you the scholarship? So they can count you as one of their scholars? I think you should tell them that you won't make that designation unless they come through with the funding.

absolutely agree with momfromme! If they want you to go there then they should honor the scholarship which officially isn't due to NM until May. If they won't budge I would check out other schools on the list from NM who will offer similar scholarship (so many schools offer great $)and choose one of those.
