i think it's only if you put rice down on the "College of Choice" spot on the National Merit essay/rec form that you filled out in the fall. honestly i dont know, although i'm assuming its after they name the finalists. when do they name the finalists (even tho pretty much all semifinalists become finalists).

It sucks! Well, it's all right if you're a finalist, but if you become a scholar you lose money. If you're a finalist, and you list Rice as your number one school (and you have forever to do that), Rice will give you at least $750/year all four years ($3000 total). If you're a scholar, the National Merit will give you $2500 as a one-time scholar. Since Rice sponsors the scholarship through the National Merit Corporation, they can't do anything about it. Supposedly being a scholar is better. The math doesn't work that way, though.

Make sure that after you get in you remove Rice as your first choice, then add it back. I didn't do this, and I almost got screwed out of my scholarship.

Wait, NYSkins1, what do you mean by "after you get in you remove Rice as your first choice, then add it back"? Get into Rice or what?

Thx!

Due to complex circumstances, I never got any money. A shame, really.

i originally put my first choice as another school that i ended up not even applying to. i want to change it to Rice. can i/ how do i do that?

Inspiration; call the NMC people... or send in the postcard they originally sent you giving you instructions how to change your school. and just a FYI, Rice will award National Merit scholarships to all finalists who attend Rice.

jon314, NYSkins, Dorian, your posts left me utterly confused. can someone explain in detail? so its bad to list rice as top choice? what's going on here?

Well, my difficulty was due to the fact that I was waitlisted. I don't know what went on with NYSkins.

I was waitlisted, too. Maybe it's only a problem if you get waitlisted.

Here's the text from a PM I sent to someone who was confused by my post:

This may only apply to waitlist, though, so maybe I'm just blowing smoke out of my rear end.

haha, me too! My dad relayed the conversation he had with whomever about this, and I remember vaguely that it had to do with their having given out all the merit aid they want to give out. That would mean that this scholarship comes out of their merit aid budget, which doesn't seem implausible. But wait, NYSkins you say you almost got screwed out of your scholarship, so you did in fact receive it? Hmm.

I was accepted to Rice; does this mean that I still need to call CollegeBoard to confirm I'm on the list?
