At our school recently one finalist had a 230 PSAT and 1600 (and lots of leadership, valedictorian, community service, writing awards, finalist for a national award, etc.). Another had a 235 PSAT and 1580, 4th in class, leadership, community service, science research, science awards and 3 years of a sport. Neither was a National Merit Scholar. So I don't know what they're looking for.

are you a legitmate U.S citizen ?

Is it just me or have other people's school also not taken PSAT's yet. Our public high school here in Dallas, TX usually does them in Early October like we did for sophomore year last year. I really wanna get this test over with.

Nope....there are only two official dates ...I think Oct. 12th and the 15th, maybe.

hey the cutoff for Mississippi is 203. So say I get 207. What will I have to make on the SAT to be considered finalist? 2050-2100?

lucky people........i wish texas's cutoff was 203...but sadly its 216....

actually..Texas is 217 anyone know commended for TX?

202...commended is the same for every state

Really? Commended is 202 this year? I thought it would go down like the general trend in NM.

:)

does anyone know what the cuttoff number is for CT for this this year's senior class?

TJ has 167 National Merit SemiFinalists
Of the 200 FCPS students who were named National Merit Semifinalists on September 14, 2005, TJHSST has 167. The semifinalists are eligible to compete for 8,200 National Merit Scholarship awards worth $33 million, to be awarded in spring 2006. TJ is the number one school in America with the highest number, as well as the highest percentage, of its graduating class who are National Merit Semifinalists. TJ consistently has over 150 Semifinalists each year. Many TJ seniors will be honored with National Merit Letters of Commendation as well, which means they scored in the top 4% of the college-bound high school juniors who took the PSAT last October.
is everyone done with their essays?
my entire life i've been told not to write myself into the essay... now i have to write one entirely about myself. i'm having much more trouble with this than i think i ought to have.

I wrote sort of a creative essay about what I do, and tied my accomplishments and goals and personality into it.

Our school made us turn in the whole packet last week. They are sending it out I believe by the 12th of October. I think 12 kids from our school were NMSF.

I had to turn in my packet a couple of weeks ago. I don't think my essay was that great, though it wasn't horrible. I should make it to Finalist standing, anyway, and hopefully get a college-sponsored scholarship.

By the way, I found out that I was a National Merit semifinalist when a college sent me an e-mail congratulating me for being one. My school didn't notify me about it until a week or so later.

CCLS,
Just get your essay done--write a draft & let your GC or English teacher give you some feedback. It doesn't have to be a literary masterpiece, mostly, it is an opportunity to show a perspective of you that colleges can request & see. Just hit the points that the instructions say you should cover & it should be fine. 15000 of the 16000 NMSF advance to NMF -- you'll likely be among them.

To become a commended student do you need the same score as a semi-finalist or finalist, or can you have a lower score?

I am a semi-finalist. My high school transcript does not list my semi-finalist status and PSAT score (232). How do I let the colleges I apply to have them? Thanks.

You can list "National Merit Semi-finalist" under the awards section of your app.

Lol Alice, I'm Rachel from TJ class of '06, but I moved to CT this summer :( waves

I'm not a sf but I am commended. I have not heard anything from TJ about it though (my counselor doesn't like to keep in touch :)) Can I still put it on my college app?

putting "commended," absolutely. saying that you are a semi-finalist woudl be a lie, however.
