We didn't find out until the fourteenth. I think my principal interpreted the "may be made public" date as the date on which he could tell us that we were in.

Oh, well. That just gives me less time to write the essay.

California is 217? Bummer--I know someone at 216, which was good enough last year for semi-finalist status. What a difference a year makes. . .

Does anyone know where to get a list of all semifinalists?

I noticed in this thread the mention about having a C or D grade and how that may effect a student advancing from NMS semi-finalist to finalist.

My son is a NMS semifinalist, has approximately 3.6 GPA, but had a C in freshman year and a C in Sophomore year. All other grades have been A's and B's.

Is anyone here familiar enough with NMS to know if a C grade eliminates a student from advancing to finalist?

Thanks and best wishes.

gnu

The one person I know who didn't advance from a "C" got it in his senior year. I don't think prior "C"s should be a problem--otherwise there'd be a lot fewer than 15/16 of those who apply advancing.

vinco- Michigan cutoff is 209. You're good. I had a 212 and qualified for semifinalist status.

rd31: Could you post your info about the MI Semifinalist minimum at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=74297
We're collecting this year's state cutoffs, and MI is a state we don't have any feedback on yet.

P.S. Were you told the cutoff is 209, or did you deduce it from who made it and who didn't?

what're the requirements to go from finalist to winner?

You have to follow all the instructions in your NMSF packet, including deadlines set by your school. The info is pretty well set out & I have a post above that goes into some of what is considered. 15000 of the 16000 NMSFs make it to NMF.

This is a fairly complicated question. You need to get (1) from PSAT-taker to Commended, (2) from there to Semifinalist (you're finding this out now), (3) from there to Finalist, (4) from there to Scholar.

(1) You found this out last spring if you were a 'high scorer'
(2) You're finding this out now from your school.
(3) Here's the process for that from last year: http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf
You'll get this year's process as part of your SF materials.
(4) Is trickier. Some schools give full scholarships to any SF that gets in, but most Finalists don't get huge amounts of money unless they go to one of those schools. See other threads on this subject...

My D has a 210, and we have not heard anything yet. If 209 is the MI cutoff then good news is around the corner. Do you know someone with 209 or 210 who was notified?

"Apparently, the top 1% of Georgia students from the some of the wealthy Atlanta suburbs are smarter than the top 1% of California or Pennsylvania students, despite the fact that the other 99% are clearly a lot less intelligent. "

Off the topic, but...

There is a lot more to intelligence than scoring high on a couple of standardized tests. And a lot more to life. A few points doesn't make one "smarter" - and performing poorly, dosn't make one "less intelligent". That's a good lesson to learn early in life.

Apparently, the top 1% of Georgia students from the some of the wealthy Atlanta suburbs are smarter than the top 1% of California or Pennsylvania students, despite the fact that the other 99% are clearly a lot less intelligent. Unfortunately for your daughter, I think Georgia's cutoff was normally 213-214 before last year when it jumped to 217 and then to 218 this year. However, I agree with you that this whole process is completely messed up.

Well, despite the fact that among my friends in Atlanta I have the lowest SAT and SAT II scores, I beg to differ that I am "clearly a lot less intelligent" than that 1%.

For CB tests, I made a 228 on the PSAT, 2190 on the SAT, 760 on Bio E, 790 on Math IIC. I scored fives on Calc AB, Bio, USH, and Chem. By virtue of my lousy high school, I took Calc AB as a freshman.

I qualified for the AIME for the first time last year, and I was very happy when I found out I made a 3 (out of 15).

I started on the high school tennis team last year at second singles, and despite the loss of half our team from graduation we still made it to the first round of state.

So, yeah, 99%, big number.

My d has a 209, MI. She hasn't heard & figured she just missed the cut by a point or two. Do you know for sure that MI's cut is 209? Thanks.

Kelsmom, did others in your daughter's school get notified? I have not heard a thing about anyone, everything I know about the notifications is from this board.

There are posts from 18 states so far about the minimums required to make Semifinalist in this thread:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/...ad.php?t=74297

Fredmar: No, to my daughter's knowledge, no one at her school has been notified. Not a surprise, since they were pretty late with notifications in the spring. If I hear, I will post.

Yes, I will post if I hear anything about Michigan notifications, as well.

Can anyone verify the 217 for Texas posted on the other thread under Financial Aid?

Just to let you people know, you want to be in the 1580-1600 range to get the actual scholarship.
