California is seriously up to 225 from 219? No ■■■■■?

CA <= 225 That means California is no higher than 225 and might be (probably is in this case) less.

That’s what gets put on the summary when we get a “I’m in CA, I made 225, and I made it” post. When we get a “I’m in TX, I made 216, and I didn’t make it,” we put “TX > 216,” meaning the cutoff is greater than 216. Whenever you see a summary template, it’s always a good idea to check the first post. :)

I read sbjdorlo’s post as he/she was in with 225, not that 225 was the cutoff

Oh, I see. I saw the 225 and got scared and didn’t comprehend it right.

Still, though, if Texas seriously jumped four points, then California may not be much better. Sucks, I have a 220. /:

My son is NMSF in NC with a 224.

Anything about MD? Just a curious rising junior here…

wemel: RE KS cutoff-- qualifying kids weren’t “allowed” to discuss individual scores, just met with the principal at the end of the day Friday. S remembers the principal saying the cutoff was 214 (not S’s score) this year. There was some discussion of how the cutoff had gone up. There will probably be some disappointed kids talking about it in class on Monday.
(I can’t swear by 214-- S is usually about 99% accurate Honestly, I was surprised that it went that high. I thought a 213 would be “safe.”)

Oh darn… I’m in Indiana and got a 212. Since the cutoff’s stayed between 211-213, I knew that I had a minimal chance to begin with. I wonder what the cutoff will actually end up being. I’m thrilled with the score that I got, though, as I wasn’t expecting to break 205. I’m not sure I made it past Commended, though.

Of course, I’m just basing that on the fact that I wasn’t told anything by my school on Friday, but it could just mean that they haven’t received any news yet.

That, and the fact that it seems as though many states’ cutoffs are rising a bit this year. I guess I’ll find out soon. Do they mail the Commended letters in September, as well? Or do they wait until May? I did some research but was still slightly confused.

219 with letter in hand in AZ. But the cutoff is surely lower.

Friend from Montana with a 209 got semifinalist!

Here’s where it stands as of Monday morning.

PLEASE DON’T FREAK OUT! Check the explanation of the notation in the first post. When you see, for instance, AZ <= 219, that means that Arizona’s cutoff is no higher than 219. This comes from a report like, “I live in Arizona, made a 219, and got my letter.” When you see, for instance, TX > 216, that means that Texas’ cutoff is higher than 216. This comes from a report like, “I live in Texas, made a 216, and didn’t make it.”

Descartesz – I’m not trying to hijack your thread; I just have a fear of losing information in the discussion if we don’t get a summary up every so often.

OKMOM94 – Since you’ve 'fessed up to being a GC :), maybe you can help. Does the principal get with his/her mailing from NMSC, information regarding the state’s cutoff? If so, I think we need to give more weight to, “the principal said” posts.

Here is a little statistical information:
For the 2010-2011 school year, the NMSF cut-off scores went up in 21 states, went down in 18 states, and stayed the same in 11 states.

^^^^Thanks, wemel. That puts what we are hearing in come historical context. Appreciate you doing the legwork on that!

When the Princeton Review guy handed back the PSAT scores at our school last year, he said the CA cutoff for this year would be 217 in CA. I asked him how he knew that, and he just said, “it’s not a guess.” I have been waiting to see how right he was, since my S got a 220, and last year it was 219 in CA. He doesn’t start school for another week, so his school won’t be notifying anyone until after LD at earliest. Looking at the #s of the top 5 percent, comparing this year to last, the CR went from 1.0 to 1.1, the math down from 2.7 to 2.4, and the writing went up from 1.2 to 1.3. Almost a wash at the top 5 percent, but it may be different at the tippety top - -the part that really matters.

IL made it with a 219. Don’t know what the cut-off is.

The thread is for everyone. I welcome any help. Feel free to update whenever – and thanks.

I find it clarifying, BTW, to bold definite cutoffs once they become known.
