National Merit Semifinalist Qualify Scores -- Class of 2012

My son made it in Louisiana with a 216.

^Do you know anyone who didn’t make it with a 210, which was last year’s score?

Just heard from DS. A 209, last year’s cut-off in AZ did not make it this year :frowning: He said the GC told him it went up several points. The other contenders at his school were all in the 220+ range so I can’t provide any insight on where it landed.

Just heard my daughter in Illinois made it with a 217.

AZCPAmom…so sorry to hear that your son’s score didn’t make it in AZ. :(

SMRmom and others…congrats.

210 was the lowest score in my school, but there is information in the packet indicating that students with 209 would make it but anything lower would not.

FL cut-off is 214 according to our HS GC. She said it was in the materials she received. I did not know that the cut-off was mentioned in the materials. My DD is one of two that made it this year, she got a 223.

The thread is for everyone. I welcome any help. Feel free to update whenever – and thanks.

I find it clarifying, BTW, to bold definite cutoffs once they become known.

PLEASE DON’T FREAK OUT! Check the explanation of the notation in the first post. When you see, for instance, AZ <= 219, that means that Arizona’s cutoff is no higher than 219. This comes from a report like, “I live in Arizona, made a 219, and got my letter.” When you see, for instance, TX > 216, that means that Texas’ cutoff is higher than 216. This comes from a report like, “I live in Texas, made a 216, and didn’t make it.”

My daughter’s GC confirmed Illinois cut-off is 216. Up by 2.

Didn’t make NMSF in KY with a 211. The cutoff must have gone up by at least 4.

What is going on here? Why are these scores going up so much? Are these states decreasing the number of NMSF? Certainly in some of these states, the scores don’t seem to indicate that there would be that much fluctuation.

skatjmam — Can you tell me if your son happens to go to the school that begins with a big blue J?

If so, my son should be coming home with some news.

Is this connected to the economy in any way? For example, fewer low income and therefore less “prepped” kids taking the test because of the costs or possibly colleges leaning on College Board to raise the scores so that there are fewer payouts?

Well, 16,000+ is still the number of NMSF. And scores are scores. In Arizona, approx. 1,650 more students took the test this year, and looking at the scores they didn’t do significantly better this year than last. The only unknown variable is the number of NMSF in any given state. I know Arizona has had a tough time economically. Have a lot of people left the state? Maybe the graduation rate has been affected.

^slippy2000 - Did your school with the Big Blue J have a lot of scores 210 and above? I know they are noted for their number of NMSF.

^^ wemel… yes… 31 boys were 210 and above, to my recollection. My son had a 211. I am worried that his college search is about to be turned upside down.

^azcpamom - Is any chance you can find out AZ cut-off from your S GC, please? My S school won’t release anything yet…
Thanks!

^^Agreed, but even though the numbers in the 75-80 range seemed actually down, the numbers in very the top ranges must have been up for the cut-off to increase. Does that logic hold up?

Fxtravel, I will see what I can do. He texted me that she told him it went up “several points”. I took that to mean that she was reluctant to give an exact score. I am thinking maybe College Board instructs them to not release the info, but will try to find out for you.

I would bet it went back to the 212 it was a few years ago.
