National Merit Semifinalist Qualify Scores -- Class of 2012

Any news from Pennsylvania?
My son has a 217, and 216 was the cutoff last year.
Yikes!!

tennessee? anyone? cut-off last year was 211 i believe, and we had about 6 people out of my school make that score. that’s 6 people who are a question away from money, money, and more money, and they’re freaking out.

Semifinalist with a 228 from Massachusetts!

212 from Kansas here. I circled an answer on test-day on my booklet in the CR section but somehow forgot to bubble it in. That was the only question I omitted, and it was a mistake. When I got my test booklet back, my circled answer was correct according to the online answer key. I would have gotten 214. The cutoff is 214 this year.

My daughter had a 213 also. She is going to be so disappointed. To be that close and miss it by only one really hurts.

No word from my son’s school in TN, but last year’s score was 212 and year before was 213. My son is also one of those 211 students. Honestly, we are not expecting to make it, but can’t help but hold out just a tiny bit of hope…

Semi-finalist in Indiana with a 214

Indiana…did your principal tell you what the cutoff was? I scored a 213…scared!

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I thought the actual cut-offs weren’t released until September? When people say “per guidance counselor” is that just an estimate or is it legitimate?

They are not officially released by College Board until September, but schools are currently notifying individual students who met the cut-off.

I got a 217 in Texas and didn’t get a letter. What has this world come to?

Ahahaha, I’m another Tennessean with a 211. I’m crossing my fingers, but I’m not making any bets. Just one silly question…

It kind of stings when you realize that the one thing that prevented you from getting a $90,000 scholarship is the fact that you screwed up counting to three on a math question. ■■■. Nevertheless, we can add Texas >217 to the list. :'(

*I got a 217 in Texas and didn’t get a letter. *

Gallon of Fire…do you know if your school has passed them out? If not, then why do you think that you didn’t make it. Many schools don’t pass them out until mid-Sept.

*Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I thought the actual cut-offs weren’t released until September? When people say “per guidance counselor” is that just an estimate or is it legitimate? *

The schools have the letters now…and some have already passed them out, so some GCs know that a student with X didn’t make it, but another student with X+1 did…so they know the cut-off.

Yeah. My friends got letters today. They all got 219 or above though.

Anyone got any news on Virginia? My daughter has 219 and I am optimistic that it will be good enough. Any news is appreciated. Thanks.

In post #39, OKMOM94 says she is a GC. In post #106, she says that (referring to OK) “there is information in the packet indicating that students with 209 would make it but anything lower would not.” That’s the definition of cutoff score. I think we can safely conclude that the principal/GC packet explicitly states the cutoff score (i.e., principals and GCs aren’t deducing cutoff scores from score comparison) and that we should be giving these reports due weight.

On a personal note, S is a TX-217. I’m bummed. :(

PLEASE DON’T FREAK OUT! Check the explanation of the notation in the first post. When you see, for instance, AZ <= 219, that means that Arizona’s cutoff is no higher than 219. This comes from a report like, “I live in Arizona, made a 219, and got my letter.” When you see, for instance, TX > 216, that means that Texas’ cutoff is higher than 216. This comes from a report like, “I live in Texas, made a 216, and didn’t make it.”

These usually are set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

Internationals=?

Commended (national cutoff) = 202 (Class of 2012 Notification Letters - College Confidential)
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not a NMSF receives commended status. This group represents the highest 50,000 scorers.

My condolences, SteveC. A lot of us on here in the same boat. I did not see a 4 point increase coming in AZ.

Are the score cut-offs by state calculated only using the scores from the “juniors” who take the exam, or everyone? Seems like it would make sense to just base the contest on the scores for the junior class. I just have no idea how it works.

Anyone from Maryland get notification yet??
