National Merit Semifinalist Score Cutoff (Class of 2011)

Because National Merit doesn't post a list of cutoff scores by state, people on this site have traditionally posted data here. As NM mailed letters August 24th, we should be getting some news soon. As you receive your notification, it would be great if everyone would update the score under their state to compile a list for the individuals who, due to school mix-ups and bureaucracy, won't know about their status for several more weeks.

Please note: Please be conscientious as you post scores on this thread--it would be crushing to be led to believe you have made the cutoff by a post but actually haven't. Also, be sure you only edit a state cutoff if the score you have is lower than the existing score under each state.

As mjl2142 posted, there is a thread for this already:

Re: your child is Semi-finalist in VA with a score 218… If you don’t mind my asking, how do you know that already?? Are you homeschooled and therefore received the letter personally at home? I thought the schools received the letters later this month, after being mailed around the 26th I heard? Please reply soon, I am waiting with bated breath!! :-O

Notifications were mailed in late August. Some schools inform qualifiers ASAP upon receiving notice, others sit on notices for a while. Names of all semifinalists are released to the media on Sept. 15.

My son was notified that he is a semifinalist today (Sept. 7, 2010). He said that the Maryland cutoff score was 220.

Updating MD

Internationals<=223 (post 370)
This is usually set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states.

Commended (national cutoff) = 201
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not an NMSF receives commended status.

No scores reported yet from:
AR
DE
DC
ME
NE
NH
NM
ND
RI
SD
WV
WY
10 (?) boarding school regions
These are usually set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

so does that mean if I got a 221 then I made NMSF?

Or I just missed it :(

Assuming:

1) You are in MD
2) The poster is correct
3) You are not at a boarding school (which are assigned other cut-offs)

then you should qualify.

Dixie…

If you’re from New Jersey, and you have a 221, then you made it.

My son said that the cutoff was 220 in Maryland. That’s what they told him when they notified the students at his school who qualified. However, I wouldn’t take his word for it, because he often doesn’t pay too close attention. The actual cutoff should be published soon.

I am under the impression that letters were mailed in late August. Are they mailed to individual homes or to schools? I am in NY with a 223, which I’m fairly sure exceeds the cutoff score; however I have not been notified of a thing.
