Has anyone received an application from National Merit to continue in the running for a corporate-sponsored Special Scholarship? I believe that notifications were to be made by early December. If so, care to name the sponsor?

No one? ? ?

But it does not look like there is anyone jumping at the chance to respond. My child just got an application for a corporate scholarship (H's employer). I don't want to name it, but it is a large company, and the entire process is handled through National Merit. I know that there was a cutoff to get this far, I am just wondering whether it is like the main competition where if you are NMSF you are pretty much guaranteed the finalist status; or is it more of a competition. The essay appears to be the same as the NMSF s had to do, judging from what I've read on this board. These small awards can add up, a few thousand here, a few more there, and I am feeling pretty good!

I also just got an application for a corporate scholarship from my father's employer through National Merit.

Hmmm...a big media corporation, perhaps?

My H's company has gone to need only awards - no merit involved though community service comes into it. Hoping DD will qualify as H is retired but don't know the requirements. She does do a bunch of volunteer work (has for years because she likes it - not resume building). She would probably have qualified under the old merit. Guess we will find out in a couple of months.

Yes my son too received the application from his guidance counselor this week. Were your children given just four days to return the completed application to their high schools? Does your child intend to type that form? Or hand write it?

My daughter said it had to be in quickly, but she didn't say 4 days! She had already starting writing/printing before bringing it home, so I guess that will have to do...

fredmar and chriscap, please post when you hear the outcome of your (child's) application so that I'll know that my son should have heard by then. Thank you, good luck to you, and happy new year!

fredmar and chriscap, I just wanted to put you at ease on the timing of the notification for this scholarship. Although the application says March notification, when my older son received this award three years ago, his notification packet was dated April 22nd! And incidentally, it came in a 6 x 9 envelope with multiple pages.

Oh, you're kidding?! Here I was all hyped for March 9, which is the date I read somewhere for the notifications. I guess I'll just have to relax and let life take me where it will. Thanks worrywort.

My D. just received the NMSC packet yesterday. She was awarded National Merit Corporate (my company) Scholarship as we expected.

Offer date: March 9, 2007
Reply deadline: March 21, 2007 (to accept the award)

My dd also received a NMSC special scholarship packet yesterday, with the same reply deadline of March 21.

Congrats to you both!

Yes, congratulations! I had forgotten all about the corporate scholarship app that my d submitted for my company. Another thing to obsess about! ACK!

I like your style, Chedva. Just when I think there couldn't possibly be anything additional to obsess over, I uncover new material. Like this weekend when my soon to be 21 year old reminded me that he'll need to get a new drivers license on his birthday. Apparently those of us who are of legal drinking age have a horizontal orientation to our licenses; those who are underage have a vertical license.

Congratulations to all of you who received the package. My d did not get the package. Is this the scholarship for the finalists?

Can you tell us were these Special Corporate Scholarships given to non-finalists or were they Corporate Scholarships given to finalists?

Mind telling us the $ value?

My d wasn't a finalist; she was Commended. My company gives out a set number of scholarships, and there weren't enough finalists. The finalists are guaranteed a scholarship; the commendeds have to compete with each other. Since we haven't heard yet (and yes, I'm getting nervous), I can't tell you how much it's for.

They are National Merit Corporate Scholarships awarded to finalists. The value depends on a sponsored company. My D. receives $2500 per year for 4 years. Although we already received the packet, the official public announcements for 2007 is April 18 that can be found in

A student can only be awarded one of the three kinds NMS. That is, if one accepts a Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship, he/she can’t compete for the one time only $2500 NMS. In our case, we will accept the $10,000 Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship.
