National Merit

Mine was admitted ED. We didn't ask for FinAid, but might he get merit aid - I'm thinking specifically of National Merit. And, when would we hear about merit aid? (It's not going to affect anything really, just curious.)

My merit awards came one day after I got my acceptance letter.

Nemom I think this explains it: “Qualifying National Merit finalists who do not apply for or do not receive need-based financial assistance will be awarded the minimum award of* $1,000 per year.”

[HMC Merit-Based Awards](Merit-Based Scholarships | Harvey Mudd College)

He can get National Merit aid and/or the Mudd Merit scholarship without having applied for financial aid, if he qualifies of course. In order to get the National Merit scholarship, he must send in his card identifying Mudd as his first choice.

Is it true that people who get the one-time $2500 NMSC scholarship can’t get Mudd’s $1-2k/yr?

@maybe: For those w/o financial need, the answer is definitely yes. The awards are mutually exclusive.

That’s what I thought, it just seems a little backwards to me (the winners end up with less money in the long run). Can you turn down a National Merit $2500 award?
I definitely would have financial need.

Thanks to all. I’ll make sure he did/will put HM as his first choice.

Turning down the $2500 award won’t do anything, especially since you have financial need - the National Merit Scholarship simply takes the place of grants in a financial aid award.

nemom:
If you think it is possible your son might qualify (check the website) for the Harvey Mudd Merit scholarship and you haven’t heard anything, call the Admissions Office and ask about it. Tell them you are full-pay and haven’t heard anything about the Harvey Mudd Merit Award. I think people who don’t apply for financial aid sometimes fall off the radar.

And yes, my son’s experience is if you get the $2500 first-year award from NMSC, you will not get any of the $1000 awards in subsequent years from HMC.

Good luck and welcome to Mudd.
