Does anyone know the deadline for the guidance counselor to get their paperwork filled out for National Merit for their students? We have 2 brand new counselors and I want to make sure we don’t miss a deadline. My son hasn’t received anything from the school yet (no one has yet) and he is in line for the Semi-Finalist.
@artie1, contact your school and let them know your son needs the letter so he can log in and begin his application. Schools think the kids get their own copy of the letter, but they don’t. They have to get it from the high school. The school does half the app but the students have to do the other half. You have to get the log in info from the letter. The school should have a link to print the letters from. If the school just won’t do it, then you can call the NMSC and explain the situation and ask their advice. Not sure if the NMSC will send you the letter or not, but at least you can try.
@artie1 I believe the deadline is October 7. So you don’t have much time left. You have to send his SAT scores to NMC and he has an essay to write. Also school will need to submit their portion after he submits his.
You should contact NMCorp and let them know the situation at the school. They can either contact the school to remind them that they were supposed to notify students a week or two ago about their NMSF status.
I don’t know if NMCorp will tell you directly if you provide your child’s name.
Also…If this were my kid who hadn’t yet been told, I’d be in the principal’s office at 8am tomorrow.
The schools really don’t know the procedure, you have to stay on top of it. We had a similar problem last year. I kept asking the principal if there was anything my son had to do, and she told me no, only the counselor has something to fill out at that stage. I knew deep down that this couldn’t be right so I called NMSC and found out the deal, and sure enough the letter had to be given to my son so he could create his account and fill out his application! We also got close to the deadline by the time it was all straightened out! The good news is that once you get past this stage, the information does start coming straight to the student!
I have to clarified that my D’s school is actually very family with the process as there are a couple dozens of NMSF each year. Each student actually got a folder from the GC with all the document and information for the process with the deadline too. It was just the final person who handle the files was a new secretary that made everybody nervous as the record keep saying incomplete until deadline.
