When's the deadline for the two college referral thing?

And which colleges should you NOT choose?

May 17, 2006. You have just under a week.

I guess which colleges you shouldn't choose is purely personal preference.

Yeah, but I mean.. isn't it pointless to list the Ivy League schools, since they won't really award merit based $?

Brown and Georgetown are my top picks.
Should I just use GTown + one other, since Brown is IvyLeague ?

Appreciate any helpp

I'm wondering something similar...do the ivy league schools see it as you being devoted to their school, or do they just not care at all? Also, I've heard that you can continue to change these picks until very late in the game. Is this true, and around how late can you change them?

Here's what I've learned -
1. There's no point in putting down colleges that don't give NM $.
2. If in doubt, CALL the college and ask the admissions office if it would give you an advantage. (I called MIT for my D - they said no advantage - read the above thread for more.)
3. You can change your mind later. There will be an opportunity for those who make it to NM Finalist to list a "first choice school."
:)

Fellow CC'ers,
I have not received anything from my school in regards to notifying 2 colleges that I got commended or semi-finalist. I dont know what to do. I really want to send it to the colleges that I am interested in. Since their are only a few days left, I wonder if it is hopeless. Can anyone help me???? I am shocked that my school did this =/.

maybe u didnt score high enough to get national merit? :-/

Your school doesn't tell you. National merit sends it to you directly.

Actually, I got mine in school on Friday (5/12)...you should talk with your counselor about it if you haven't gotten it.

vinny380, contact your guidance counselor at school ASAP. My D's letter was addressed to her with our home address, but came to her school. Her GC passed out the letters a couple of weeks ago. Are you positive you qualify? You must be a current HS Junior, 203 or above on Oct. 2005 PSAT. Good luck!

thanks all that responded! Yes, I am a junior and received a 204 on the PSAT in Oct. Do you think I should just call National Merit directly, or talk to my guidance counselor first??

What? I haven't gotten anything from the CB and I got a 234, so I'm pretty damn sure I got it. So we should call CB if we're current juniors?

Wow, this sucks.

vinny380,
Talk to your GC first. Hopefully he/she will have your letter and has just been very slow in giving it to you. (Which, IMO, is inexcusable!) If the GC doesn't know anything about it, call NM.

vinny380, cutoffs are based by state, so you might have to check it specifically for your state.

Sorry, juniorinhs, you are mistaken. At this point, current juniors who took the Oct. 2005 PSAT and made 203 or above - no matter what state - have made the first cut towards NM. This is a national cutoff score for the top 50,000 students in the USA. The next step will be NM Semifinalist, revealed in the fall. That is when the state cutoff scores are the deciding factor.

thanks all those that responded and tried to help! I was called in the headmaster's office today and was given the letter. woo-hoo!! =)

Congrats! Glad you received it in time. :)
