National Merit has mailed the semi-finalist notifications out today! If you are a parent of an 11th grade student and you get notified that your child has made the cut to semifinalist can you please post your state and students SI score? Since notifications letters only get sent to the schools, homeschoolers generally learn about semi-finalist status first.
The cut off in each state changes every so although people know their scores they do not know if their score made their state’s cut off.
National merit does not officially announced the cut off. By posting the state and the score of those that get the letter we can figure out the cut off. My son goes to a very large high school and the GC office is swamped and won’t share info from National Merit for weeks.
An example:
My D has a 217 in Oklahoma. That’s above last year’s cutoff, but cutoffs are expected to rise this year. If a homeschooler from Oklahoma is willing to share that their 216 in Oklahoma made NMSF, then I know that my D made it, too. It will be a few weeks before we find out D’s status officially.
What really helps is for people to post things like “My D is in with a 217 in [STATE].” While that doesn’t confirm the exact cutoff for whatever the state is, it will bring relief to a lot of anxious parents and students who have that number or higher.
Posts like “Nothing here in [STATE] today” let everyone know to keep waiting for that state, which tends to let people sleep easier for one more night.
While I don’t want anyone to post information they’re not comfortable sharing, I know I’ll be extremely grateful for every scrap that comes until my state’s cutoff is confirmed.
@3scoutsmom
I think you meant “12th grader” in your OP, but your point of course remains.
@AroundHere , let us know if the question makes sense or if we need to explain something better. Essentially , Home School parents get results before students in public, private, or charter schools because they serve as the Guidance Counselor role and therefore will have access before the parents of those enrolled in another type of school. The only thing it will “change” is how quickly information is learned. As @DiotimaDM said, the state, score, and positive confirmation helps narrow the cut off score for everyone in the state.
@3scoutsmom, I think you’re issuing an all-call to parents of 12th-grade homeschooled students, correct? The students took the PSAT in 11th, but now they are in 12th. And you’re correct: Homeschooling parents with 12th-grade students who may be National Merit Semifinalists have been a huge help in past years by posting their state, their student’s SI score, and whether or not that student made the cut-off for that state. Homeschooling parents will have this info before principals at other schools, most likely. TIA to any of our homeschooling parents who can help crowdsource this info.
Thanks to @3scoutsmom for asking the question, and thanks to any homeschoolers who are willing to share. I’ll be paying particular attention to posts from Texas. My son is sitting at 222, and he attends a big public school so I suspect it will take the GCs some time to notify NMSF. If I can find out the Texas cutoff via this thread or other internet resources ahead of the GC notification I’ll be really grateful. Of course my son hasn’t mentioned NM at all lately and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t even know that NMSF notifications are coming out soon, so this interest is all me. So far his senior year is pretty relaxed and I don’t want to do anything to change that
So I took the PSAT yesterday and didn’t put down my home address as the school address (I did say I’m homeschooled and give the name, city, and state of my ‘school’) - will this be a problem with the NMSF notifications? There was no field to write out the address of my ‘school’ although of course they have my home address (and I double-checked to make sure it was correctly filled out).
(I hope I made NMSF, but it really depends on my writing and reading scores…)
