Does anyone know the National Merit policy for FSU? Does the university have a university-sponsored scholarship? I just graduated as a junior from my high school and will be attending FSU in the fall, and with a 223 on the PSAT I will likely advance to semi-finalist and then finalist standing.

Hey fellow national merit-ist! yes, fsu does have a national merit scholarship. Its six thousand per year. the only downside is that you can only get one scholarship from them, therefore cant get the university freshman scholarship or anything like that, and if you also get a corporate scholarship they subtract that amount from the school sponsored one, making it moot. But overall its pretty good.

Isn't the University Scholarship for outstanding freshmen some $9000 per year?

It's $2400 per year.

its 9800 total, but thats divided up between semesters

sorry to butt into the FSU forums again, but I did alot of research on the NMF process myself.

Within the state of FL, most of the publics will give generous awards, UF gives $24,000 over 4 years, along with a few other perks (first registration, honors, etc), FSU I believe more or less matched this award with very comparable money. If you're looking for big money though, look into UCF and FIU, both had awards close to $40,000 I believe. Out of state there are alot of schools that offer close to full rides as well: UT Austin, Michigan state, Baylor, and probably a bunch others that I'm not even thinking of right now. Most private schools didn't come close to a full scholarship for NMF alone, USC offered 1/2 tuition, and maybe a few other schools did the same.

What you need to know though, is that ALL of these scholarships are contingent on you selecting the college of your choice as a first choice school. If you select UF as your first choice and go to FSU you get nothing, and vice versa. Any other questions just lemme know, I did an exhastive search last year and decided on UF for the best combonation of strength in my programs of choice (engineering or business) and money. Good luck.

USF Tradition of Excellence Scholarships for National Merit Scholars gives $10,000 annually for 4 years and a laptop computer for NMF or National Achievement or National Hispanic Scholars. Jan 14 is the deadline. For non-Florida residents they offer 100% tuition annually for 4 years, on-campus room and board, and a laptop computer.

I've already applied to FSU and I have been accepted to the honors program for fall '06. I listed FSU as my first choice for national merit, but I will be a sophomore by the time I would be eligible for a national merit scholarship (because I graduated from high school as a junior).

I think you should call the Financial Aid office at FSU and ask them about this. It's an unusual situation and one that no one here has probably dealt with before.

um...ive dealt with it lol. yeah, UCF has a really great deal, but FSU was where i wanted to go in the first place, so it worked out.

What is unusual is that she won't know if she is a FINALIST until her SOPHOMORE year at FSU since she graduated her JUNIOR year of HIGH SCHOOL. She is asking how the FSU national merit scholarship would work in this situation. She needs to call FSU directly and let us know how they will handle this situation.

My guess is she would get the UNIVERSITY ($2400/year) scholarship her freshmen year (if she met the admission deadline and was offered it) and then switch to the NATIONAL MERIT ($6000/year) scholarship her sophomore year (if she becomes a FINALIST) assuming she keeps up the requirements as far as GPA and number of credits at FSU.

amw06m - Good luck and let us know the outcome.

I called earlier this year to ask about it. I remember it being a long ordeal and I could never get any answers because the people who would know the answer weren't available. I left a voicemail with my callback number and never got a response.

Still, I just called them. I called Financial Aid first and they transferred me to Admissions (because apparently that's where they handle National Merit). There, the person with whom I spoke did not know anything about it and couldn't find someone there who did. I'll just wait until the fall and go in and personally talk to them so that maybe I can get something accomplished.

yeah, theyre never there and ive never had them call back if you leave a message. they gave me some answers in financial aid, but yours might be diffrent, just keep calling until you get someone competent

I would strongly suggest you email and telephone the Director of Admissions and set up a personal appointment with her or her representative at FSU.

Offers of extremely nice packages will not be handed out randomly unless they see some real indication (transcripts from HS and test scores, even if preliminary) of performance, and know you are interested in FSU. They will not enter a bidding war on the phone with random calls with those they do not know know and are unsure about.

Remember that FSU is a large school and they will bide their time for the best students in this realm. Admissions officers refer to this, somewhat too directly perhaps, as 'buying' the NM scholars. They know they are in competition with everyone else for these students. However, the students who really want what FSU has to offer and is extremely good in - will find the school no matter what.

Good luck - we did it this way and were very pleased with the personal attention we received.

I will be attending FSU in the fall and I just want to find out about the scholarship and if it will apply to me (since I'll already be a year into college before I'll be eligible). I don't plan on engaging in a bidding war. And my call isn't random.

I have to qualify for the scholarship first, which means being a National Merit Finalist (which I most likely will be -- like I said, 223 PSAT), and I will have to maintain a certain GPA I believe to qualify for it from the university.

Don't take my answer personally. It was general in nature and intended for readers interested in this area. No one but Admissions will probably be able to give you anything certain.

When someone said that you can only be awarded one FSU scholarship, does that mean that if the school of music awards you scholarship $ you cannot get the freshman scholarships or any other FSU based funds?

I don't think so. I think you can only receive one merit scholarship. Departmental scholarships are separate of that. I could be wrong, however, so you may want to check with the School of Music or the university.
