Does anyone know if NYU gives money to National Merit finalists? And if so how much? And when would we hear about it? Thanks!

I had the same questions - and the answer I got was "nope"...you were considered for all scholarships and received it in your FA packet. If you get one of the NM scholarships(from National Merit Corporation), it can be used to reduce your loan debt.

Seems unfair to me...but then again, they are NYU......

:(

There is no specific amount of merit $$ for NMF finalists. However, the Henry M. Baird Scholarship is often given to NMF finalists, whose total academic package is worthy, but NYU must be designated as the applicant's first choice.

Is need included in that? And any idea how I might find out more about it. The folks at Financial Aid (I think Iw as talking to a student both times it seemed) were less than helpful to me so far.

My D has a 3.9 (unweighted), 2290 SATS, 5 AP's, 2 college courses completed and a small but impressive list of EC's. Now I know NYU tends to draw the superstars, but that isnt shabby.

Mikksmom, yes, need is a component of all NYU merit scholarships. The top 10% of applicants receive some sort of merit award, but they range from $1,000-25,000 (the larger one, I believe, is for the Presidential Scholars in CAS). All applicants are automatically considered for all available merit awards when they apply, so if there was no mention of it in her financial aid package, then unfortunately, she didn't get it. I have heard of kids who have appealed their financial aid package but it usually isn't very successful, beyond possibly a couple of thousand dollars. I agree that your D's stats are excellent. Maybe another call to the F/A office is in order, and perhaps request to speak to someone other than a student. :)

My S has similar stats to your daughter, a little stronger on the SAT and AP/IB front, and a little weaker on the GPA. I've called once to financial aid, but they suggested that I stop by when I go in for Sat in the Sq, and I'm thinking I'm going to do that. I find it's so much easier (for everyone) when you're talking to a live person. I notice you live in Allentown---what do you think of that idea?
