But this is the thing: I never commented about who deserves to get into certain colleges. This post was about if an award I received should be considered a national or an international award. I mentioned Affirmative Action briefly as a JOKE for god’s sake in one of my follow up comments(I acknowledge that this was short-sighted of me).
I never said that AA should be discontinued. In fact(unless you misread my previous comment), I endorsed it and acknowledged that it is necessary. I just said that a system based on parental earnings instead of race might be better, and if you disagree with it, then fine. I didn’t want to discuss it because it is controversial, and I only brought it up because of some derogatory comments. I personally don’t agree with developmental acceptances(donations), but I kept it to myself on this post.
I never mentioned about my country’s colleges anywhere in my comments. I think you are confusing this answer with some other one. I never talked about my “standards” or how I deserve a place in one of the most selective institutions on the planet. I don’t(I’m pretty insecure about myself). I am doing everything within my reach and hoping all turns out for the best at this point. I don’t have an elitist mindset. I come from a middle-class family(that probably equates to a lower-middle class in America) and attends my school through scholarships.
This post came out of a genuine question about how a reward in my country should be viewed in terms of college applications, and it got distorted along the way. I still can’t believe how you dismissed me as a snobbish aristocrat from my comments.
Yes, categorizing myself as an Asian-American was foolish of me:). Ignore my previous comment(it refers to Asian Americans, which I am not). I don’t want to fall into that hole again.
How do I have a condescending and offensive attitude towards AA? I ENDORSED it. I do believe that it is necessary and I do believe in ethnic diversity. In fact, I founded the Culture club at my school(it is an international school but many foreigners suffer from discrimination). I am personally friends with people of all ethnicities who are equally brilliant in their own way. Please give me your reason why you think my attitude was offensive in my comments because I believe that your own comments are downright demeaning.
Face it, you hit a nerve, now let it go. Be careful with your apps because tippy tops are sensitive to how an applicants’s comments, approach, or perspectives are informed vs ill informed. As you proceed, watch out for hearsay and assumptions.
@onceortwice Believe it or not, I’ve had this happen to me here on CC – where something I said got turned into something else and some people were downright mean. I’m an international student too People here are generally very helpful, so long as you stay off controversial US topics. And there are amazing people here too, so find them and listen to them.
I don’t know why you guys are being so harsh on OP. He didn’t say anything offensive, just maybe a lame joke and poor choice of words here and there. He’s not American and may not be familiar with all the subtle ways we offend each other here.
@yucca10 @gigichuck Thank you!
