Hi everyone,
My portfolio was approved and the instructor told me I got accepted into SAIC at NPD. but I'm still very insecure. Once my portfolio has been approved, it means I'm 100% admitted to SAIC?

and also, did anyone from past years (2001~2009) get into SAIC with a situation like mine? when do I actually get the acceptance letter from them?

and also, how do I apply for scholarship by FEB.15 without getting the actual acceptance letter from SAIC like now or this weekend?

I had my portfolio approved by SAIC last year November at the Pratt NPD. What “approval” means is that you have satisfied the portfolio requirement of your application. In simple terms, it means that you will automatically be accepted to SAIC or whichever school approved you, once you apply (assuming you dont have a serious disciplinary record or abominable grades).

After approving my portfolio they sent me an email giving me all the instructions about what to do next. You will have to fulfill the other requirements of the application process, transcripts, sat scores, referrals, fees etc. once you submit that stuff (preferrably online) you will then be officially accepted.

If you are applying for merit based aid, you will need to submit your portfolio with the rest of your application. I believe all early applicants are automatically considered for merit awards though there may be some box to tick on the online form. You do not need to get an acceptance letter or be accepted first to apply for merit awards as there is no separate process. Just submit your a complete application package including portfolio.

if you don’t get an email from SAIC a few days after the NPD, just call the admissions office.

Haven’t decided yet. It depends on where else I get in and how much financial aid I get offered. I applied/ am applying to Cooper Union, SAIC, Art Center, California College of The Arts, Chelsea College of Art (london) and thinking about SMFA and RISD. So far SAIC is the only one who’s got back to me.

I’ve never visited the SAIC campus but everyone online seems to rave about their facilities. I did however see Pratt’s campus which I found very… bleh, then again i find pratt as a school to be kind of… bleh.

yeah, it seems like a lot of people say Pratt is like blehhh, the school is good though.

I got an email from SAIC (art institute of Chicago). On the portfolio day, the instructor there told me that I don’t need to send a portfolio, but on the email it says,

even if my portfolio has been approved alrday, I have to send a copy of my portfolio to SACI office prior to the deadline. Is it for the merit scholarship or just to save my portfolio?
and the copy means the CD or slide?
cause’ I actually subbmitted ePortfolio before I attended NPD. Do I still need to send it though? and also on the email it says, “If you have already submitted your ePortfolio for admission, you will need to submit your work to us via slides or CD/DVD.”

why do I need to submit my work via DVD again? i’M A LITTLE CONFUSED.

choose SAIC over pratt. pratt is well known to the general public, but if you look at who is showing in the top galleries, the graduates are almost always from SAIC, SMFA, Cooper, MICA, and to an extent RISD

SAIC’s facilities are incredible and you will get a very interdisciplinary approach to art, which is very much appropriate for today’s art scene. i went for pre-college and it is a fantastic school, and if I don’t get in to Cooper ED then I will be going there

and you still need to submit your portfolio, it is to be considered for merit scholarship. and, judging by SAICs high tuition rates, i’m sure you’d like to be considered

At last years NPD, the reviewer said he’d recommend her for merit scholarship. When we went to visit, she met with another admiss couns who accepted her portfolio. School facilities and location are great. Dorms are awesome high rises in the heart of downtown. D decided she didn’t like the pass-fail deal. Didn’t want to put 125% into the same project that someone barely passed and get the same grade. She may consider it for MFA tho.

Well you can only submit a maximum of 20 works through the online app and most people wouldn’t recommend less than 10 examples of work. Keep in mind quality over quantity! Also the chosen works must cohere in some way or another.

I didn’t apply to pratt cus I agree with jorge. I have no idea why pratt is commonly considered a good school for fine art. They produced a few notable painters before and during the 60’s but it’s been down hill for their fine art department ever since. Maybe their prestige rides on the competence of their other departments or maybe their relative selectivity gives the impression of excellence. But you’d be VERY hard pressed to find a recent pratt alumni in any major contemporary gallery/museum. Same thing for Parsons. Parsons is a great design school but it has not produced any popular contemporary artists other than Ryan McGinley (who studied graphic design mind you).

Hi everyone.
I got into those schools and I am having a very tough time choosing one.
I got into Commercial and Advertising for Syracuse U, communication design for Pratt and SVA, and interior design for SAIC.
Which school is the best among those?
Lots of people say go to either Syracuse U or Pratt because Syracuse is the regular private school, it’s highly selective, ranked 52 in Nation, and I can study other majors such as English or etc. and Pratt is one of the best art school (undergrad).
Should I go to Pratt, the ART SCHOOL, or Syracuse, the REGULAR???

I’m sure I want to work in art/ advertising field. After graduation, which school would give me better chances to get good jobs and good titles?

Also, if I want to apply to Ivy league Grad school such as Cornell and Yale, graduating from which undergrad college would give me better chances to get into those schools?

One more, Is it much easier to transfer to NYU from Syracuse U than Pratt or the others?

For the field your going into any of those would be fine. The differences to consider are lifestyle. SVA is in the middle of NYC with no campus. Pratt has that contained campus…more cohesive social life. Syracuse is a whole different animal. You get the total American college experience. Diversity of majors, diversity of student body and chance to minor in a liberal art or business. But the city is blah and it is very cold.

But you ask about transferring to NYU. If that’s what you really want then you should choose Syracuse. I don’t think many of your credits at Pratt or Syracuse would transfer over as easily.

As for an Ivy league grad school…I guess Syracuse would make more sense because you’d have that liberal arts experience to demonstrate your level of academic achievement. But you’d better have a killer portfolio as well.

If you were really focused it would not be impossible from any of them.

MICA has a fantastic graduate program in Graphic Design…Ellen Lupton!
