National Scholar

Hello,
I received a letter within my admission packet congratulating me for being chosen as a Brown National Scholar. I tried to look online for some explanation as to what exactly this means (although the letter made some statements regarding the honor) but could not find a comprehensive page. Is this new or have others here received this in past years?

I received one of these letters as well& also cannot find a more elaborate description of this award. :/

How odd… I hope we receive more information soon. In any case, it sounds amazing. Woot! Congratulations :)

Congrats to you too Jannie132!!
& silverturtle thank you for the links

…it seems like the award is bit of a mystery here on CC, will keep it on a list of things to ask when I attend ADOCH

I got that too. My understanding is that it’s for National Merit Finalists, who then get the college scholarship that is part of that program (scholarship from NMSC, colleges, or corporations). But I could very well be wrong since I have no evidence to support this, besides a feeling. Are any of you NMF? If not, I’m wrong.

Edit: I’m wrong. Looked at silverturtle’s second link. Now I’m curious too! Damnation!

I got it too, and I’m an international student (no NMF) :S. Any ideas on what are the privileges, or the criteria for being awarded this “status”?

I know what it means! I just finished ADOCH (which was AWESOME), and my dad finally figured out what the National Scholar is. After talking to many people who didn’t know, he was told that it is used to distinguish people the university really wants to attend. So, if you got it that means two things.

 1. You are an interesting, intelligent, special person that Brown thinks would be an excellent addition to their community. Be proud.
 2. If you didn’t receive enough aid and got a better offer at another good school, it is more likely that Brown will match it since they want you.

Basically, it’s just extra financial aid funded by alumni. So far as I’ve seen after a year, there isn’t too much else to it, although it makes you feel cool
