<p>I’m a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar and on ASU’s scholarship calculator, they said I qualify for a full tuition and fees scholarship, leaving me with just room & board, books, and transportation (I live in Alaska so that’s a serious cost!) to pay for. Does anyone know if this scholarship is automatic upon acceptance or is it competitive?</p>

<p>@ap99654 My son got his admission letter first, followed within a week by a letter from President Crow with the scholarship offer. I think that it is pretty much automatic, but there may be some exceptions for particular circumstances.</p>
<p>You will need to apply separately for Barrett Honors College, but it should be automatic in your case.</p>

<p>@ap99654. My son was not a National Scholar; he received a President’s Award. I don’t know if there are other awards other than need-based financial aid. Have you visited yet? </p>

<p>@Beaudreau Oh, okay, I was confused. I have visited campus; I was down in the area my sophomore year to visit family and my college-obsessed grandfather insisted we go to Tempe. I loved it! </p>

<p>@Beaudreau no, but I’ve heard nothing but great things about it (it seems like a LAC experience with big university advantages from what I’ve been told). I’m not sure what the required stats are to get in, though.</p>
<p>You will get in, just write a good application. Average ACT is 30 and SAT is 1349.</p>
<p>We have visited several times and know many kids who have gone to ASU/Barrett. It’s pretty special.</p>
<p>You do have to complete the application for Barrett, but admission is automatic for National Scholars once they get your application.</p>
<p>The scholarship is automatic also. There is an extra Gammage scholarship that you can apply for once admitted to Barrett. It’s specifically for National Scholars. Only 4 students receive it, $4,000 a year. Holistic, app stresses community service.

<p>A small part of the National Scholarship is administered separately. That is the $1,000 that pays for the annual ‘Barrett fee.’ You need to write a thank you note to someone by a deadline to get that money the first year. After that it seems to be automatic.</p>
<p>And of course the small bit that is connected to NMSC has to be renewed each summer through them. That may be $500 or so? hey will email and remind you, but have to keep track of these things.</p>
<p>Some depts may give extra money to stack on top of the National Scholar award. You need to inquire at both the school and dept into which you are applying. My D received a large extra award, but that was a talent award. </p>
<p>Barrett is fairly expensive for room and board. It is VERY nice and the food is great, so it seems worth it to us. So far the full tuition scholarship has actually dispensed for somewhat more than tuition/fees. I’m not sure how they determine what amount to award and if everyone gets the same amount. Different schools charge varying semester fees. There are also some course fees, and all online courses have an extra fee. But the amount given is well over all that for D, at least $1,000-$1,500/year more.</p>
<p>Does your health insurance cover you OOS? ASU has 2 options for those who need it. They have an inexpensive ‘bridge plan’, $360/yr. That gives discounts on care at the student health center, so you pay only $10 per doctor visit and other things like xrays and labs are also cheap. But it does not cover major expenses that require care off campus. They also sell regular student health ins for $2000+. Something to consider when you go far from home.</p>
<p>I think ASU has more National Hispanic Scholars than any other university in the country. I remember reading that on the school website.</p>
<p>I am also an NHRP scholar looking at Barrett, and after I applied to ASU (haven’t applied to Barrett yet but will) they just sent me the letter saying I had gotten the scholarship, so I’m pretty sure it’s automatic. If I attend ASU, I’d be going there this fall. We might be classmates :)</p>
