I haven't see that much discussion on these forums about science olympiads... How much is a gold medal or 2 at nationals worth? I mean, you generally get a full ride to the host school, but how much value do the adcoms place on this, since it is a team event (although only the 2 people in the event get the prize, it takes a good team to get to nationals)...?

no one? bummmp :P

last bump, nobody has anything to say? :(

I really don't know how much national medals will be valued by colleges. Both of my boys have been involved with science olympiad and they have won numerous awards at local and state competitions. One of them made it to nationals one year, but did not win any medals. My college son did mention his participation in his essays. I don't know if it helped or not. The fact that it's a team competition doesn't reduce the accomplishment.

Was this a major EC for you? Will you write about it in your essays, talking about what you've learned, what it's meant to you, etc.? That is the value of EC's in my opinion.

Here's the link to the science olympiad forum. You could ask this question there, as the students who post are mostly hard-core SO competitors who are more likely to know. http://www.scioly.org/obb/

Yeah, it is a pretty major EC for me. I put in close to two hours a day for quite a long time. I'll try asking on the scioly boards. Thanks :)
