Very cool! :)

Nice but anything involving math makes my hair hurt. :D

Bossf51, yes, my hair hurts, too, when it comes to math, but I can appreciate it in the abstract. :)

You can appreciate math in the abstract but not in the full published paper?

That’s the oddest reading disorder I’ve ever heard of.

TD, (groan!)

Interesting that UMASS Amherst wasn’t in on this.

They’re too busy partying up there…heard the first week was a disaster.

I don’t want to comment on UMass’ partying, but it does strike me that UMass as a university is in a different league than LACs, and I don’t mean that pejoratively. I would think the whole NSF application process would be completely different for research universities and LACs.

Yes LAC and Universities especially state universities would probably have different policy’s etc involving consortium - it might have something to do with under grad ed vs grad and post doc research. On the other hand I am about to spent the day with the NSF and their myriad rules and regulations so be careful what you wish for
Also for those non mathy science people great article in the Wall Street Journal about the dire need for Taxonomy students since the previous generation is almost extinct.

I’m sticking up for UMass (as an alum of last century). In the 1980’s UMass certainly was a party school…but also a pre-med school (one friend) and a pre-law school (my wife as well as a good friend) and also a pre-MBA school (UMass education got me into a top 10 MBA program)…etc. etc.

Large universities often give students more options than small LAC’s, good and bad (including mass consumption of whatever.) As in all schools, you seek your own level and you will find it or move on. My crew all got quite a lot out of the school, including the parties!

However, when going to UMass today, it is much more tame with most activities happening off campus. Its become more of a sports oriented school than I would ever have dreamed.

And, may I humbly suggest, UMass WILL be a destination for many of our Smithies…

Yeah, they need them particularly in Congress. They should not only raise the Taxonomy but more importantly the top two percent of income earners in particular.

Brie99, our former financial advisor was a UMass grad. I believe he majored in math and went on to the NYU MBA program, a top program. In any case, he was one crackerjack guy and well as a good human being. He’s moved on and is now a high muckity-muck in the organization. One’s education is what you make it.

I’ll join you!

The founder of a company I’m associated with received his BS and PH.d in Physics from UMass, has worked for Sandia National Labs, etc., and is a nationality recognized in his field. One alum doesn’t make a college’s reputation, but he by is no means an outlier. The list of distinguished UMass alumni is impressive.

I come in contact almost daily, or know personally, countless UMass students. There is almost none I wouldn’t hold in the same high regard as I do the vast majority of Smithies.

Also, many of my friends are UMass professors. Without exception, they’re brilliant, caring individuals. I’m informed by students they’re as wonderful in the classroom as I’ve known them to be in their personal lives.

Does UMass have at times an issue with underage or over-drinking? Sure, as do most colleges.
Did I mention how creative UMass students are? :)

CrewDad, I love the stir-fry record!

Just want to throw in as a math major i’m super stoked about this!
