Hey guys. I got an invitation from the NSHSS today. It was very formal and pleasant. I am wondering if it is worth the $70 or so.... Is anyone else in it?

not worth the money in any way in my opinion, but feel free make your own judgment. i hope you’re not judging the value of something by its packaging.

Never pay for these kinds of things. Real awards are free.

Idk, I’ve done quite a bit of research, and it seems pretty legit. In fact, the harvard dean of admissions said something good about on its website.

It doesn’t sound like a scam. However, it’s not worth the $70. Awards you have to pay for are not as credible as awards you don’t have to pay for (or awards that pay you).

Simply from a logical perspective, if someone can get $70 for every person they offer an award to, they have a massive incentive to offer more awards. Further, the most likely people to pay for an award are those who aren’t getting as many as they’d like for free, which provides an incentive to offer more awards to less-qualified people.

On the other hand, if an award is free, offering it to more people just reduces its exclusivity without any incentive.

Finally, if an award pays you, there is an incentive to offer it to fewer people.

Well, the letter says that there is a bunch of scholarships and national events I could attend. And…idk if this is credible, but it did give a real name. It said that and MIT student said he couldn’t have gotten in without it…

I did see that Harvard video that you were referring to, but to be honest I don’t think this is that legit. I’ve gone through multiple threads from previous years regarding the ‘National Society’ for High School ‘Scholars’ and I know for a fact that their claim of only allowing students with a GPA of 3.5+ is totally bogus. Do you even really want to be involved with an organization that actually charges you to join? (lmao, it was actually $40 a couple years ago).

In sum, up to you, but you’d be wasting a pretty penny. Just go and get a game instead.

You may be right, but you can get scholarships, and I need a *****load of them. Also I can get a grad cord, which is cool. Haha. Idk it’s probably just another thing to put on the app. And most things that say “National” are appealing.

it may be “legit” as in a real organization, but it won’t boost you in the eyes of admission counselors. “national” is only appealing when its attached to something of importance, not a random org. that sends out cards to massive amounts of students. It’s not presitigious (obviously! it doesn’t require anything except for payment of $70 to get in). I think that putting it down on an app. would be a red flag to admissions that you are desparate to fill in lines on the applications.

I’ve been sent cards for the past 2-3 yrs. There are so many scholarships you can apply to, so save your $70. and buy some coffee so that you can fill out some more applications. Don’t fall for this “legit” scam

If your organization is so great, why do you charge us money first? Why do you promise scholarships only after people have joined the organization by paying the fee? lol.
