National Society of Collegiate Scholars

Is anyone familiar with this organization? My son sent me an invitation letter that he received to join this org. because he is in the top 20% of his class in college. The fee to join is $75. While they tout various benefits to joining such as scholarships, job opportunities, etc., I'm wondering if there really is a true benefit?

I should have queried this board for feedback first. Seems like there are similar threads posted with good information in them.

We received a similar letter. You indicated similar threads. Please help us find them.
Thanks

Ah, the rite of passage. When the kids are in fifth grade, it is clear what is a pay-for-experience opportunity. You get the brochure in the mail that describes Camp Giddyup and you can see right there that five days of ponies costs $XXX and you can decide if it is for your kid and your pocketbook.

Not so high school. Now there are “invitations” on thick, embossed paper. The language is carefully calibrated to stroke the egos of teens and parents. These “opportunities” are only sent to a few, select beings we are told. It is a “chance” not to be missed. Words like “leadership” and “Scholar” abound.

Just for fun, read the same material as if it was selling toasters or time shares. If you start laughing and are incredulous that any boob would believe this stuff, then you have your answer. It’s not an opportunity – other than an opportunity to lighten your wallet.

Given the large number of legitimate honorary Greek named societies at the college level, starting with Phi Beta Kappa and extending to the various ones within specific fields such as history and psychology, this organization sounds like a money-raising effort that will embarrass if included on a resume in the real world. So, basically, what the other posters said.

Agreed with both moms above, trash it.

It’s a scam IMHO. Here’s an earlier thread with more info:
