I have received a letter saying that I have been nominated for the membership in the National Scoiety of High School Scholar. I need to pay a one-time membership fee of $45. I have no idea what is this. Is this the same as the National Honor Scoiety? Please advise.

No. Ignore it. It's a scam.

It's kind of a scam, BUT, they do offer some nice merit scholarships for seniors.

they will waive the $45 fee if it is a financial hardship for you family -- you just write and explain it. (we did this for my son).

I have actually been impressed -- we recieved notices of several different summer/school year programs that we were not aware of. He is also applying for a few of the scholarships.

This is a newer program that they are trying to build -- but so far, it has been beneficial to my son.

We got this and tossed it. It is NOT - repeat - NOT the same thing as National Honor Society. NHS is FREE, and you have to be selected to apply to it by your high school. Ask your guidance counselor about how your hs selects members for NHS.

The funny thing was we got this mailing today, it promises that joining will help my son get into college. Well he's a senior, and all his schools' application deadlines passed a month ago. If Hsmomstef is right, maybe they will send you some info on scholarships, but any group that charges you to join and claims being a member will get you into college sounds like a scam to me.

I don't remember if the material said anything about helping get my son into college -- I wouldn't have believed that anyway. My osn got his in the spring after 9th grade (I am guessing his PSAT score was the referring point)

Their website has quite a bit of information and you can read through it and judge for yourself if it would have any benefit --

This is not the National Honor Society (which also won't necessarily get you into college) but I would say it is a slight step about Who's Who (which only gives out a few scholarships) and the National Honor Roll.

I am not saying to pay the fee and sign up -- I just wanted to say that my son had benefited from the group and would hate for someone to throw it in the trash without looking at it if they might benefit from it.
