National Society of High School Scholars

Has anyone heard of it or know if it's worth it? I've heard people say that the good colleges don't think a society you pay $45 to get into is worth crap, other people say that $45 isn't a bad price to pay to have a national honor society on your transcript. Has anyone else been invited to join this society? Do you think it's a waste, and that I should hold out for something free like the National Honor Society?

Thanks!

it's a scam.

I get those postcards, but my imaginary sister gets them too.

do u get an invitation from National Honor Society? or can anyone apply? i think ur school has to have a chapter right?

PS i would also like to know if NSHSS is worth anything, and the same for CSF (cal scholarship fed) thanks

national honor society you have to ask your school about.
NSHSS=SCAM

all these "national society" mailings tend to be scams...

sports61kh, your school applies to to be a chapter in the NHS and then they recommend you for induction based on various criteria like good grades and lack of pot and stuff. I think. I don't know for sure, though...

it's not National Honor Society people....you gotta read

I got the same invitation, and in fact when I asked my dad for the money he was very dubious because he thinks it's some private business that tries to get money from high school kids are desperately wanna to go college. so right now i didn't apy anything yet when i find out more info i'll let you know

don't do it!! it's not worth it and colleges just think you're trying to buy yourself awards and stuff when they see it

Icefire, we all know it's not NHS- maybe you could read too :D. NHS just came up, since I mentioned it as a legitimate alternative to the NSHHS. But that having been said, I would really appreciate any updates or info! Thanks!

It was helpful to have it confirmed that this is most likely a scam. One of my friends brought her letter into school today to ask if any of us got it and what we think about the legitimacy of it.

if it's a scam, r we not able to put it on our apps, or is it just unadviseable?

Last year, I did pay for it. I don't know if it helps with college admissions, but it gives you a lot of chancesfor scholarships through which you can pay back the 45 dollars. Also, there are a lot of events that teach you about college and help yu find a good school.

Lol, my brother who's a freshman, keeps on getting mail from them. Stupid spam.

The first time my daughter got one of these mailings in middle school (National Honor Roll, National Society of High School Scholars, Who's Who among High school etc etc) I asked a college guidance counsellor. She said any 'honors society' involving paying to have your name put in a book is totally meaningless to college applications.

There is another thread about this. A poster there said she was invited to join - and she is the Mom and has been out of school 30 years. They get your name from mailing lists. They will invite your cat to join if his/her name is on a mailing list. It is meaningless. It does not go on your transcript. It will not impress admissions people - just make them roll their eyes.

but it's not a penalty to write them on the app? like ppl can still write down scams?

my school's guidance counselors sent out an announcement the other day to the juniors, saying that they don't believe that nshss is a worthy organization, and they don't advise us to send them any money

It might actually hurt you. College kids are expected to have common sense. Or it could show you have humour if you list each and every 'scam'.

Basically, unless you are actually doing it as an extra-curricular, do not list it. I did not even put NHS (the club at my school) on my list, because I did not really even do anything with them. I did not put any clubs that I did not really participate much in on my EC list as I felt that I would be scamming AdComs, just as these organisations have done.
