<p>Has anyone else done a program through NSLC? How was the experience? Was it worth the money? Tell me everything.</p>
<p>I went to NYLC, which is basically the same thing.</p>
<p>I had a WONDERFUL time. It was most definitely worth the money.</p>
<p>We did some of the same touristy stuff that most kids do on their 8th grade trip. But we also got to sit on the floor of the House of Representatives, and I got to meet the Congresswoman for my district! </p>

<p>I attended NJLC 3 summers ago. I was in the Medicine and Healthcare program. It was really great! </p>
<p>BUT...it wasn't worth the money. There are a lot of free programs out there that are better and longer.</p>
<p>^I've also done CSLC on Forensic Science and Crime Scene Investigation...I thought it was AMAZING. Way better than NYLC, and I actually still talk to the people I met there (I don't really talk to those I met at NYLC).</p>
<p>I think you just have to go with the right mindset. If you go with the mindset of "I only want to do it if it's going to look good on college apps" or something like that, you won't enjoy it. You have to go for fun.</p>

No one around here had ever been, so I was pretty sure I wasn't... until a friend of mine told me he had a friend who was the page of our district representitive (Jeff Fortenberry) and I guess she has seen a lot of NYLC and NSLC students and said they all seemed to have an amazing experience!</p>
<p>Hi, HisGraceFillsMe. My daughter was interested in the Forensic Science 10 day program at Fordham University this summer. How did you like being in the heart of NYC? What was best about the program? Not so good?</p>

<p>I actually attended the program at San Diego State University. :)</p>
<p>CSLC was an INCREDIBLE program...quite possibly the best 10 days of my life. I met some amazing people there, and one girl even drove down from Palm Springs (about 2 hours) for my birthday. My Team Leader offered to write us any recommendations we needed. You get the picture.</p>
<p>I think the best part of the program was that they had actual Forensic Scientists come to give lectures, which included big figures like the head Trace Evidence Analyst in the Danielle Van Damme case (I don't know if I spelled her name right), the head medical examiner for San Diego County, and a Forensic Odontologist who worked at the Twin Towers after 9/11.</p>
<p>Also (don't tell your daughter this if she goes, it's supposed to be a surprise), the first night we got there, a murder was staged, and we were given the rest of the ten days to solve it! :) At the end of the 10 days, we presented our theory to a panel, and that was how we earned our college credit.</p>

<p>Has anyone done the International Diplomacy program? because I'm going this summer and I'm curious what kind of experiences people have had :)</p>

<p>I went NSLC MED last year at UMD. its a good experience, i met a lot of cool people, would've met more if i wasn't so shy. only 10 days, but its 2,300 i think. </p>
<p>Worth the money? surely not in terms of content. but i still liked it. </p>
<p>if you can afford it and you're not financially in need, then why not. but i didn't think its worth 2 grand.</p>
<p>I am thinking about taking the Law & Advocacy, Political Action, or International Diplomacy programs. Has anyone had any experience with these summer programs? Is so, what are the upsides and downsides? Did you put any of this on you college application? Did you do any of the community service associated with the program?</p>

<p>I went to NYLC last summer, I had a fun time, but was it worth the money? I don’t know. I applied for a scholarship and my family is middle class (not low-middle) and I got like $600. If you’re interested in politics, then you’ll have fun for sure :)</p>
<p>I absolutely love DC and interviewing my congressional legislative staff was an experience I’ll remember forever. </p>

<p>My daughter did the NSLC health and med last year. We viewed it as basically a very expensive summer camp in her area of interest. She applied for and received some financial aid. She attended at UC Berkeley, the closest site to us to cut down costs, and then we picked her up and toured CA colleges for a week. She had an amazing time, one of her best experiences. She used several activities, from the leadership component and medical experiences, in her college essays. The question of is it worth the money really depends on how much you have, but she did get a lot out of it.</p>

<p>First, just fyi, you are “invited” based on test scores, etc., but basically anyone can go. In my daughter’s experience though, the kids that were there did want to be their and overall were great kids. The kids are broken up into smaller groups led by “TA’s” who are responsible for them. They are given boundaries around the campus where they can/cannot go. Their was a large group of homeless camped in back of my daughter’s dorm and she never even saw them the entire week (not that they were dangerous, just saying they were out of bounds). They go everywhere with their small group, and the days are quite full, and evenings have activities as well. At night the TA’s patrol the halls. No one tried to get out my daughter’s week but their TA told them stories of catching kids other times so I guess it isn’t unheard of. You could possibly skip out on some activities, you are not watched constantly, but why would you want to? All of the kids my daughter was with were interested in the subject, and wanted to be there. Of course I’m sure it depends on your kid. I wouldn’t hesitate to send my younger daughter if she is interested. My daughter had a great time and it was a learning and growing experience for her. @pacnwmom hi, i’ve just read your reply to this topic and I’ve got a question for you.
I was wondering how ur planning was like. I am an international student looking to study in America… maybe even for med school…? ( I know it’s difficult but it’s worth a try :/)
That being said, I was wondering what colleges you toured in CA since you mentioned you toured around in CA. Which route did you take? I’m interested in looking at Stanford, the UCs, and USC mostly.
