I went to NSLC Med and it was fun. If you want to have fun, go. For these programs, if you apply early and have a decent transcript, you're in. I'm not sure if it'll make a big splash on your college apps but hopefully it will not be a factor in your decision.

i went to NSLC mastering leadership over spring break last year... i heart it. it was so much fun! granted it won't really give you an edge in the college applications, but it was just an amazing experience. i met so many people that are so different from those at my highschool, and it was just amazing. i would go back and do another program, but it's just too expensive for me to go back twice. but i would def recommend the program if you are interested in more than just trying to do something over the summer that will look good on your apps. it's an experience for yourself.

I just got an invitation in the mail yersterday, and I was very excited.

I plan on doing the Diplomacy Abroad program for 2 weeks in France, Brussels, and the Hague. It's going to cost a hefty $5000 though, so I have a LOT of fundraising to do.

I was very excited about the opportunity, as were my parents, but it seems many people here think that it's not worth it........

Now I'm a bit confused and hesitant about whether I should do it or not..........but I desperately want to visit Europe, and I feel something like International Diplomacy would be the perfect major for me.........

if you're going just cus you want to go to europe.. then don't spend $5000. anyone can go to europe for a cheap amount of money, backpacking through.. staying at hostels etc, just find a friend to do it with you or go travel w/ your family. however, if you are going for the experience then it is worth it, and going abroad may cost you a lot but you will meet really awesome people. so if you can afford it, id recc doing it

I got that packet also, and here's my conversation with my dad:

Dad: I see you got some mail about a leadership conference.

Me: Oh, it's just junk mail to spend your money, dad.

Dad: Well, if I had $5,000 I would send you.

Me: But, you don't, bummer.

elusivestranger,

I want to do it for the experience: meeting new people, seeing what a career in the field might be like, pushing my own boundaries.....

I probably wouldn't do it if I had a better alternative. Does anyone have any ideas about where I can find summer programs or opportunities?

Is there a website perhaps?

well there are plenty of programs to meet new people, see what a career is like etc. it depends on where you want to go.. europe? colleges? if you want to go to colleges, id reccomend CTD in northwestern, and alot of other schools have really good summer programs. not just "prestigious schools", many state schools have good summer programs as well. as for going to europe/another country, there are other programs. there's a bunch of sites on CC, just search for them.. they are in the parents forum and there's a featured discussion on it. gluck with searching..

thanks elusive,

I'll search for those right now

How much does it cost tigeruppercut?

Went to Medicine and Healthcare 2004

It's okay. It's not that outstanding. Costs a lot of money though. You really don't learn anything unless you put in some effort to stay awake during the lectures. It's fun to make friends and stuff. I still talk to them now, even though it's been more than half a year. Waste of time if you ask me. If you really want to get involved with medicine, intern at NIH or something.

I got that last week, the NSLC. I can't go, even if I wanted too. Too much money (around 2000) for one week? Crazyness.

I'm so excited, I just got this now and I hope to go to either the med. one or engineering. I've also been pre-approved, does that mean I was nominated or just scored high enough on some test? It's going to take a lot to convince the parentals but I hope I can. It looks like so much fun!

Yeah - since it was one week, it could be taken harmoniously with other summer progs. But the cost is so expensive that my parents refused

even if you get accepted can you withdraw money later? I'm not sure if i'll get into EPGY. If i get accepted to EPGY i'm planning to withdraw NSLC.

5,000 bucks for 1 week isn't worth it to me if it's going to cause a small financial burden.
