My son has been "invited" to the National Student
Leadership Conference, which appears to be a series of
workshops in various disciplines held at various times
over the summer in various locations.

Is this something recognized and valuable that I should
look into, or is it just another money maker (like the
Who's Who of Students)? By the way, it costs $2195 for
ten days.

Meh. My kids have gotten several of those, and other "invitations", but have never chosen to do any. Yeah, they all come in fancy envelopes, with gold foil inside, official-looking eagles, White-House-looking-emblems, :)

These programs are not going to give you any kind of "boost" in an admissions process, nor would you even list them in your resume; but we have friends who have participated in the Law one and the Medical one, and they both had a great time.

So, if you are looking for a fun semi-educational expensive trip.....go for it. I believe the costs of the programs are so high because of the fees they pay to the suits in attendance.

DD attended a NSLC program at U of Maryland last summer. She very much enjoyed it, met some wonderful people, and learned a little. She wanted to do something that was somewhere in between being at camp and going to school. This was the right thing for her. Also, she lived in a dorm on a large college campus for two weeks...something we felt was worth experiencing. She knew no one who was attending the program so she was in the position of being in a strange place with people she didn't know. She had a terrific time. Yes, it was expensive, but it was well worth the cost for what it gave our child. If you are looking for a prestigious program that will be an added tip for college acceptance, this is not it. BUT if you are looking for a nice summer program this could fill the bill.
