National writing competitions?

I'd like to enter some sort of nationally-recognized writing competition. I feel like I'm a pretty good writer, and I'd like to try my best shot at potentially being awarded for it.

What are the top writing competitions in the country? Ones with awards I'd be proud to put on a college app?

The National Council of Teachers of English grants achievement via its an annual writing competition for high school juniors. My S won an NCTE award, and we did think it boosted his college applications to a modest degree (but he wasn’t an HYPS level applicant). I believe in order for you to participate an English teacher at your school would have to be an NCTE member and shepherd your submission.

Thank you, the reply is much appreciated.

I would like to say I’m a top-level applicant, but it’s still fairly early (finishing up sophomore year) and many things haven’t happened yet. But I will try to find out if any of my English teachers are NCTE members.

Thank you!
