My D was nominated by one of her teacher to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Collegiate Success (NYLF/CS) to be held on university campuses nationwide this coming summer 2011.

Is this worth it or just $$ down the drain?
Thanks

If you go back through some older threads, there’s been a lot of debate about NYLF/CYLF/P2P and all the other “big name, high price” leadership conferences. From what I’ve read, I’ve heard that they are either just alright, only worth the price tag if you’re REALLY into that subject.
That said, I’ve never been but have been “invited” multiple times. Overall, it seems as though if you can pay, you can go. If she’s a 2013, I’d go for HOBY - [Hugh O?Brian Youth Leadership | HOBY | Home](http://www.hoby.org). All leadership based, much more competitive (their big international program only accepts 400 students, usually only 5 from each state because of all the internationals.)

Understandable, many students who attend any type of camp like these are self driven. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, or anything but it shouldn’t be forced.

Anything sponsored by the NYL should be approached with the following questions:

1) Do I have enough disposable cash that it won’t affect my budget to pay for this?
2) Does my child really want to go?
3) What is the real educational or social benefit of participating in this?
